- Hello! I'm Rachey, and I'm one of 20 Battlefront Campaigners!
My campaign aim is to get the law changed so that the minimum wage is equal for everyone, instead of being £3.30 for 16 year olds, £5.35 for 18 year olds and finally £5.52 for 21 year olds, regardless of the job they are doing.
Is this wrong? I think so...people should be paid for the job that they do, NOT the age they are when they do it!

My Campaign....
Hello all!
Just wanted to say thank you all for your support and stories, I've really really enjoyed working on this campaign but unfortunately I've decided I'm not going to be able to continue with it, firstly because of the recommendations that have been given about the minimum wage meaning it won't be rising in 2009 at all due to the credit crunch, so I can't achieve anything in the 9 months that this project will last, and secondly because I'm starting a new job on Monday which is longer hours and further to travel than I am used to, so I won't have anywhere near as much free time.
If any of you feel strongly enough about the minimum wage issue I would recommend you join the British Youth Council who also have a campaign of their own going, and write to your MP's because the more letters they receive the more notice they have to take...

The effects of the Credit Crunch...
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all! Hope you had a good one =D
Unfortunately, because of the whole credit crunch recession and the fact that it has been predicted that 3 million people in the UK will be unemployed in the next 2 years, the British Chamber of Commerce has recommended that there is no minimum wage increase at all in 2009...because businesses already under a lot of strain will find it difficult to find the money to pay a higher minimum wage.
I do agree that the minimum wage for 21 year olds of £5.52 should not be raised, but at the same time this doesn't change the fact that the minimum wage for under 21's is grossly unfair.
Obviously this has created a bit of a barrier to my campaign, as when I started out nobody knew there was going to be an economic crisis, and obviously the aim of my campaign is not to encourage unemployment but to try and create more equality, so I'm going to try and find out how much it would actually cost to raise the minimum wage of under 21 year olds to the same rate of over 21 year olds...unfortunately the British Chamber of Commerce office was shut when I called but I'll try them and the Low Pay Commission again on Monday and let you know...I also have a meeting set up with my mentor for Wednesday to discuss this. I will also be finding out what the businesses who do pay fairly regardless of age think about the idea of an equal minimum wage being introduced at a time of economic recession.

Maximum age limits...
...as I discovered a few days ago (having never really noticed in the past) I've recently applied for an awesome opportunity where you get to travel Brazil, China or India for 6 weeks experiencing the general culture and doing some voluntary work...their maximum age limit for applications is 19 (this is regardless of education, work experience etc) and my boyfriend pointed out that (as he's 25) he can't apply, and that is really almost as bad as the whole minimum wage lark (I say almost as bad because obviously the national minimum wage for under 21's affects a vast amount more than a travelling experience but personally travelling is pretty much almost the top of my agenda so I rate it in a higher sense) anyway was just wondering about the general opinion of maximum age limits on opportunities like this...

Im 15, and I knwo im not entitled to a minimum wage.
I worked 22 hours one week.
Got paid £45.
That equated to £2.10 an hour.
Working 24 hours over half term.
It'll be interesting to see how much I get then..

So hows the campaign goin? You won't believe this but a friend of mine who's 17 told me she gets paid 4.10 an hour at her work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was so shocked...young people are literally bein exploited!

Loving your first stunt blog! It was great seeing you last month again! Hope everything is going good! Just to let you know, you probably already know this but the British Youth Council are running a minmum wage campaign too.
