Any Advice

Soldier Boi Chez
Im really unhappy in civilian life at the moment. I am currently a Cpl in the ATC and even there i am feeling unhappy. And I am feeling pressured into going college, university and to be an Officer straight away by my parents which argue allot causing me to be more depressed. But currently I would like to join now as a Gunner and do A- levels in my spare time with the Regiment what are the benefits of doing this and then going for a commission in say three years time?2 Replys 16 weeks -

The RAF doesn't fly the Apache - that's flown by the Army Air Corps - however if you want to be a helicopter pilot, then the RAF operates plenty of other types like the Sea King, Chinook, Puma and Merlin and these aircraft have a major operational role from Search & Rescue to movement of troops in Afgahnistan.1 Reply 17 weeks
To become a helicopter pilot, you need 5 x GCSEs A-C, including English, Maths and Science as well as 2 x A Levels Grade A-C. If you have a degree, that's even better and you need to be in training by no older than 23 years old. You will need to complete a 4-day selection process which tests your aptitude for the job, time management, leadership and management ability, knowledge of current affairs, your stamina and medical fitness amongst other things. If successful, you will then start Initial Officer Training at the RAF College in Lincolnshire. This lasts 32 weeks and teaches you to be an Officer in the RAF. On graduation you move onto flying training during which you will be streamed to an aircraft type - fast jets, multi-engine and rotary. Rotary pilots move on to the Defence Helicopter Flying School in Shropshire to train to fly helicopters before being posted to the Operational Conversion Unit of the aircraft they will fly.

Hi Iso,
Thank you for your enquiry a couple of weeks ago, seeking information on career opportunities in the Royal Air Force.
As part of the procedure for gaining an offer of service, it is necessary that we obtain a number of clearances in respect of candidates. One of these clearances requires the candidate to have resided for the 5 years immediately prior to application, in the UK where meaningful background checks can be made.
I realise that the above information will be disappointing to you, but I would like to thank you for your interest in a career with the Royal Air Force, and to wish you well for the future.

And some more answers:
To Chaz who asked about work expereince,
Sorry, the RAF no longer organises Work Experience as an organisation, however, individual RAF stations can provide work experience should they have the scope to do so. My advice would be to speak to a local RAF Station or possibly even your nearest Armed Forces Careers Office who may make the first contact for you.
Good luck, hope you enjoy it!
Some more answers!!
To Nathan Beck who asked about eyesight and joining as a WSOp:
You can't be a Weapon Systems Operator (Acoustics, Electronic Warfare, Crewman) in fast jets, but you can be a Weapon Systems Officer (Navigator). For both of these branches you need your prescription to be +3/-2. For more information on these jobs look on www.raf.mod.uk/careers
To Michael W who asked about the selection process:
For information on the selection/application process for both Ground Trades and Commission please go to this link http://www.raf.mod.uk/careers/applic...
And to Paul B who asked about WSOps:
WSOp is currently recruiting and will have further
numbers to recruit next year. It can take approx 6 months to go through the process however, so if it may be worth going to your AFCO sooner rather than later.
Hi everyone,
Sorry it's taken us so long to come back with answers to your questions, but here's a 'bumper' set of answers for some of you who left questions a while ago:
To Rudy, who asked about Apprenticeships:
As long as you have GCSEs at Grade C in Maths, English Lang and Science you'll be able to apply for one of the engineering ground trades. You can always apply for your commission at a later date if that's what you want to do.
To Jay who asked about joining the RAFP:
The RAF recruit all year round, but are given certain targets for certain trades. If a trade meets it's target before the next recruiting year, the trade may be closed for a period of time. The trade of RAFP is closed at the moment, but to keep up to date with it I would recommend being in touch with your nearest Armed Forces Careers Office.

Hi everyone, sorry if you are still waiting for a reply to your question - we are working on it!
But here's a reply to Jonathan Goldring:
You asked us about the qualifications you need to join the RAF Regiment. You don't need any qualification to join as a Gunner, and to join as an Officer you need 2 A-levels or 3 Highers or equivalent, and 5 GCSEs/SCEs at Grade C/3 minimum or equivalent, including English language and maths. You can find out more about the Regiment on our RAF careers site: http://www.raf.mod.uk/careers/jobs/r...
Rest of the answers coming soon!

hi there do u need any qualifications 2 join the raf regiment?
The RNZAF needs fighter jets!
The F-15SE Silent Eagle is the perfect option!
To Jordan C:
Sorry for the delay in replying. You asked what qualifications you need to join the RAF as a pilot.
The required qualifications to be a pilot in the RAF are:
5 x GCSEs to include Eng Lang & Maths
2 x A Levels in any subject
To Soldier Boy Chez:
Again, sorry for the delay in replying to your question!
You asked about applying to be a Gunner:
The RAF recruit every year but the amount we recruit for each trade will change. At the moment RAF Regt Gnr is 'unavailable' but we are hoping to get next year's numbers in Sep/Oct and once we do the trade will reopen. You can see what trades are still open on the RAF Careers website: http://www.raf.mod.uk/careers/
Cheers,
The RAF Team
