About Me

Tagline
Live it, feel it, write it, win it
Me, Myself, and I
Are you a great writer in the making?
Or do you just want your voice to be heard?

Paper Cuts is a competition from ChildLine that gives you the chance to be published in a Penguin book.

What matters to you matters to ChildLine too. So we’d like you to write 100 words or less about just that. You can write about any topic in any style – stories, lyrics, poems, screenplays, a stream of consciousness or anything else. Just as long as it’s something you really care about.

All of your entries will be read by our panel of Paper Cuts judges, made up of ChildLine and Spinebreakers representatives, a Penguin publisher and one of their authors.

Once they have shortlisted their 100 favourites, your Paper Cuts will be posted online and put to a vote. Entries must be in by 11th August 2008, voting closes 1st September 2008 and winners will be announced on 29th September 2008.

Know what you want to say, but can’t make it work on the page? Maybe our top tips will help - see r
Be Yourself
Writing is such a personal thing. Even the best writers usually look to their own lives, and the people in them, for subject matter. So whatever you choose to write, you’ll find it comes much easier when it’s from your heart.
Beat Writer's Block
You can a few things do if you’re struggling. What’s the stupidest thing you could say? What’s stopping you from concentrating? Write about that. However bad it is, sometimes you just have to get it out before you get to that place where every word is electric. Otherwise try finding inspiration from elsewhere – whether it’s a book, music or even doing some exercise.
Break the Rules
No one ever becomes a great writer by following a formula. So allow yourself to make mistakes. Experiment. Does a poem need to rhyme? Does a story need a narrative? Find what works for you.
Re-Write
When you’ve finished, take a break. Come back to what you’ve written in an hour or two, and the chances are you’ll see it completely differently. So re-write it, or simply tweak a word here or there, and you’ll end up with a much sharper Paper Cut.
If Your Words Are Sharp, Papercuts
Get published.

  • Nick Hornby: Well known Penguin author, best known for High Fidelity, About A Boy and Fever Pitch.

She waited while the referee showed a yellow card to the player who had tripped her up. The ball was already on the penalty spot, and she tried to focus on where she was going to put it, but she was more worried about the celebration afterwards. If she shouted, they'd hear her voice properly. If they jumped on her, they might feel something they shouldn't. If women were allowed to play Premiership football, she could concentrate on her game, not the deception.

She took a breath and smacked the ball against the crossbar. Only she would ever know what a brilliant shot it was.

  • Taio Cruz: Upcoming R’n’B singer, songwriter. His next single I can be featuring Estelle is released

Even in situations down and out, your favourite song can lift you out,

it puts a smile onto your face. Music matters.

It helps us feel in some sort of sense, that someone relates to our experience.

It helps us to not to feel alone. Music matters.

I've loved it since before I was given a name, and I'll love it till I need a Zimmer frame

It makes me who I am today. Music Matters.

For me I couldn't live a day, without my voice, guitar, or a piano to play

So for me it’s truest when I say. Music matters.

  • Nihal: Radio 1 DJ on the Weekend Breakfast Show

Besides the obvious things like my family and friends who mean the world to me, MUSIC is the force that envelops my life. The sound of booming bass drum, underpinning a beat that bobs-an-weaves around a melody, that inspires a human to sing from the depths of their soul inspires me. My music is intrusive if invited, demure if ignored, explosive if detonated or sombre and respectful in times of reflection. It is a job, a fuel, a foundation and an obsession. Music matters to me, if it doesn't to you then you just haven't spent enough time with it.
