About Me

Tagline
singer/songwriter
Me, Myself, and I
Jake Patrick Robert Hook, a British born singer-song writer and recording artist. Raised in Camden, London by an Irish catholic mother and Protestant English father. He credits his musical abilities to his childhood theatre company.

As a child Jake was no stranger to the stage or the film industry as he starred in 4 London musicals and appeared in the BBC drama "The Biz" - he sang backing for Meatloaf and appeared on the TOP 15 hit "I am in Love with the World," released on Columbia in 1997.

It all started with great-granny's old piano which she left to Jake in her will, not because he showed promise, but because he was the only one in the large Irish family not to thump the hell out of it! However Jake didn't learn to play that piano. Dyslexia turned granny's sheet music into a sea of meaningless dots, which Jake would join together to make the face of his music teacher, until she washed her hands of him. But Jake knew he could play, he just had to find a way to learn.

Every Saturday morning at kids theatre, nine-year-old Jake would lie under the baby grand, memorising how the chords were formed and how they sounded, until he too could play the tunes in his head. Out of this came a stripped, raw and sensitive musicality, unconventional in its roots yet fresh in its presence. Jake's musical influences include Peter Gabriel, Counting Crows and his vocal talent has often been likened to another of his musical influences George Michael.

After his self funded debut album ‘Record on The Blag’ containing 17 original tracks failed to ignite sales Jake left his first label. In 2006 after numerous label changes Jake founded his own label LBM and with financial backing sourced from around the world has written a part autobiographical album explaining a young man’s journey through falling in and out of love, finding yourself and being bullied, this album ‘The Butterfly Observations’ dubbed ‘the torch song’ album of the new age is yet to be released, although the debut single for the album, Elusive You was released and charted in several territories.

As we start 2008 I remain optimistic that Jake will go on to be big in the music industry, with two 7digital indiestore number ones to his name so far this is only the beginning for this young man who in my opinion has yet to reach his true potential. Growing musically with each track he writes, unafraid to try new and different sounds and unlike a lot of musicians today the ability to sing as good live as he does recorded.

Jake’s music makes you feel on so many levels and does in a number of different genres, his upbeat tempos and his beautiful ballads have lyrics with such intensity and passion you simply have to hear them for yourself. Combine his good looks, his talent and a voice that is so powerful and filled with emotion, Jake Hook is a musician who sheds new light on the concept of the singer-songwriter. As for Granny's old piano, it has been by his side ever since

  • Jake on Tour 2008

Soho Revue Bar - 13th May

    Set List

Waterfalls- Taken from the very beautiful album 'The Butterfly Observations'

Fireflies - Fan favourite Fireflies it's always great to hear.

Alexandra Hill – First of the new songs, sure to become a favourite.

Silent Whispers - Another debut performance taken from Jake's number one Ep SXY.

Careless Whisper – The first of Jake’s covers, went down really well with the crowd, move over George Michael.

Back For Good – Another firm favourite with the crowd and also Jake.

Already Gone – Another first live performance taken from the forthcoming album 'The Butterfly Observations' a very moving and beautiful song, I hope he sings again.

From the outside the Revue Bar doesn’t look big but it has a tardis effect with an old cinema feel and numerous stairs, it was my first visit to this venue and I wasn’t disappointed, the room was very dark with a large stage slightly raised from the dance floor. The seating was in different levels and imitated old fashioned booths, in red leather with little black tables and big round globe lights on each, the bar ran along the whole of the back wall with more standing space in front of it, mostly I noticed it had a great atmosphere despite the fact the seating layout gave a certain privacy to its customers.

Wearing black shirt, jeans and grey tie Jake sang seven songs in total to a full bar, it had been almost a year since I last saw Jake perform live and I had forgotten just how good he was, starting with the very beautiful ballad Waterfalls and then onto the much loved Fireflies both songs coming from his forthcoming album ‘The Butterfly Observations’.

Written about one of Jakes favourite London views newcomer ‘Alexandra Hill’ was a great song and I’m sure will become a popular addition to Jakes set, as if this wasn’t enough next was another first, taken from Jake’s indiestore number one EP, SXY was the simplistic but emotive ‘Silent Whispers'.

I was in for a treat next when Jake did an absolutely fantastic cover version of George Michael’s ‘Careless Whisper’ one of my all time favourite songs I was totally blown away by this and so were the crowd, who began to clap and cheer and then sing along with Jake, who kept the mood going by following up with the very popular Take That song ‘Back for Good’, by this point the crowd were really hyped and there singing grew louder.

Finishing his set with another debut song, Jake sang the very heartfelt and poignant ‘Already Gone’, he gave a flawless and emotional performance to a now quiet audience. Combined with an amazing vocal performance his great sense of humour and of course some incredible songs it was without a doubt that Jake would and was well received.
