RARA and The Pretty Vacant Showrooms are pleased to present Diamonds are Forever, an exhibition of new paintings by Dundee based artists Steven Cox and Fraser Gray. This is their first joint show with the gallery.
An unusual Art exhibition in a vintage clothes shop in Dundee opens to the public on Friday 5th of September at 6pm. Bringing a contemporary twist to the traditional subjects of figurative and landscape painting, two of Duncan of Jordanstone's recent graduates Steven Cox and Fraser Gray, are exhibiting new work that has been painted directly on the walls as well as exhibiting canvases in the gallery to the rear of the shop.
The show provides a brand new approach to contemporary painting, focusing on the contrasts in scale and medium. Gray's bold, large wall and linked canvas themed paintings will be in contrast to Cox's intense X-small figurative canvas works and pattern based wall works. Both artists use graphic patterns and bold colours in their work in order to powerfully contradict the traditional approach of painting.
Steven Cox’s X-small scale canvases communicate profound visions of quasi-narrative confabulations that create a tone of uncertainty, embodying themes of nostalgia and romanticism. These underlying themes are powerfully contrasted by the bold use of a recurring brightly coloured diamond pattern.
Fraser Gray works in spray paint, emulsion and oils to create bold imagery exploring our country’s colonialism. His works contrast graphic shapes representing consumerist ideals against the nostalgic imagery of traditional landscape and figure painting.0 Comments 458 days
