- Hi there. I’m Shakila. I work with L’Oreal to help market new high fashion cosmetics and perfumes. It’s really important for me to understand the science behind each ingredient, and be able to explain how it works in a simple way, so that people who buy our products understand what they do.
Some people are surprised when they find out I’m a scientist, because I get to work with great beauty products all day. So I thought I’d share my experience on Bebo, and help challenge people’s ideas of what you can accomplish with maths and science!

FAQs
What subjects did you study at school?
GCSE – biology, chemistry, physics and maths
A Level – biology, chemistry and maths
What qualifications do you need for your job?
Because my job is all about understanding chemical compounds, it’s really important to have a good understanding of chemistry and some biology too. Whatever subjects you choose, maths and science A levels are very important because they open up so many future job opportunities.
How much can I earn?
I can’t speak for every company, but if you work at a large cosmetics company like me you’ll do well for yourself. And don’t forget all the free cosmetics too, not a bad perk! ;-)
What other careers can Maths and Science lead to?
Research and Development is a huge area within cosmetics, we’ve got lots of people developing new products all the time. Then there are the people who design all the jars and bottles we use, who also have strong understandings of science and maths. And that’s just a miniscule fraction of the possibilities!
What advice can you give someone who wants to do your job?
Be a people person! Enjoy working with lots of different people and have an inquisitive mind. Science and maths are often considered antisocial careers where you sit alone in a lab, but it can’t be further from the truth. Everything I do is to help people, so it’s important to get to know them!2 Comments 593 days

Emma35 weeks agoHiya! Thanks for accepting my add. I was just wondering a couple of things about a career in a cosmetic development as it is something I am really interested in (however I can’t seem to find much info on it!)
I was wondering if a degree in chemistry would be suitable for this career and was just interested in what you did your degree in? I was also interested in how you got into cosmetic development after university, do companies offer internships and things like that?
I would love any feedback, I’m a bit worried as I have to start making my uni choices next year (I’m doing my AS levels now) and I really want to make sure I choose the right things
Thanks you and I hope you have time to write back
