Wellington, New Zealand – Mates & Lovers, written and directed by Ronald Trifero Nelson (Bud, Corner 4 AM & Cuba), is based on the 2009 Montana New Zealand Book Award winner Mates & Lovers, A History of Gay New Zealand by Chris Brickell, with special arrangement with Random House New Zealand.
Ronald Trifero Nelson is now in his second year of a Masters degree in directing at Victoria University of Wellington and Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School
In this captivating performance, actors Kent Seaman and Sam McLeod add flesh and blood to dozens of untold true stories of our brothers, fathers, uncles and sons throughout 300 years of New Zealand gay history.
FAANZ welcomes back choreographer John Butterfileld from San Francisco to the BATS stage.
Mates & Lovers includes the stories of individual men – their trials, tribulations and sheer determination to make their way in a sometimes unsympathetic society. It will translate into compelling theatre. Ronald Trifero Nelson is skilled at capturing the essence of human situations and emotions and projecting them onto the stage, and I know he’ll do a fabulous job with the book’s life stories. I can’t wait to see the show!

Trans workshop, willl need to book spot through museum!
Trans Workshops at Canterbury Museum 28 July and 18 August
In January 2008 the Human Rights Commission published To Be Who I Am: Kia noho au ki tōku anō ao, the final report of our Inquiry into discrimination experienced by transgender people (www.hrc.co.nz/transgenderinquiry). Over the last year we have been running a public education programme alongside the Assume Nothing exhibition which is now at the Canterbury Museum.
The Human Rights Commission is running 3 free workshops on Tuesday 28 July and Tuesday 18 August in partnership with local trans people and the Museum. These are:
· Trans 101 - come along to hear from a diverse range of trans people and to ask questions
· Young and Trans – how to create schools, youth groups and health services that are positive, inclusive and safe for trans youth and
· Trans Vocal – the power of using creativity to express gender identity and build a sense of community
