À propos de moi
The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) helps those living with HIV/AIDS stay independent.

BGF continues to provide the grass roots support to those living with HIV/AIDS to alleviate poverty and to assist our clients to live as independently as possible. We provide financial assistance for those struggling to make ends meet; financial counseling and the necessary support and training needed for our clients to escape crisis and take back control of their lives.

In addition BGF operates Australia's only community housing facility for people living with HIV and AIDS who are unable to live independently.

BGF is Australia’s longest serving AIDS charity and the only one of its kind. It is estimated that over 50% of those in NSW with an AIDS diagnosis use BGF’s services.

  • Who was Bobby Goldsmith?

Bobby Goldsmith was a 38 year old Sydney gay man who died in June 1984 of medical complications caused by AIDS.

Bobby is remembered as Australia’s swimming sensation at the world’s first Gay Olympics, held in San Francisco in 1982. He dominated the swimming events winning 17 medals, including 11 gold. A keen fund raiser himself to send lesbian and gay athletes to San Francisco, Bobby was active in Sydney’s gay scene, community gay activities and had a wide range of friends.

In February 1984, a group of Bobby’s friends held a meeting at Sydney’s Gay Centre to find a way to enable Bobby to receive the love and care he needed at home, instead of going into hospital. At first Bobby’s friends provided support by way of services but, as his health deteriorated, it became necessary to buy medical equipment. A wheelchair, commode and special support mattress which all helped Bobby maintain a more comfortable lifestyle at home.

Although Bobby died a few months later, the principle of providing support and services for people living with HIV/AIDS was established.

Named in his memory, The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation Inc. (BGF) has been continuing this work for over 19 years, improving the quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS in NSW.
