- I am a writer of Historical Fiction because iHistory concerns Memory. There are moments when I have a sense of déjà vu in the pages of my 14th century novel, The Unhewn Stone. I like to live in the past -- the medieval past. Perhaps I have an active ancestralmemory gene like my heroine in Bianca's Birthday Present. Or, more likely, I'm still obsessed with historical research because I failed History in High school. Corrected that little faux pas in Uni though.
As an only child, I had real & imaginary friends, climbed trees and dressed in costumes I made from old curtains. I loved to swing across the river on a rope and act out scary stories. I bossed everyone and taught them how to play 'properly'. ie. by my rules. Now, my characters take me to fascinating, and often scary places and I am compelled to record all the fun. - Music
- Rock, Jazz, Swing. Dixie but most of all Rockfest!
- Films
- At the moment my all time favourite is Enchanted. A while back it was Bridge to Terrabithia and before that Mighty Joe Young. The Lives of Others. Old musicals especially Two Weeks With Love; On Moonlight Bay; Three Little Girls in Blue; Carousel;
- Sports
- No question about it the Formula 1 Grand Prix. I'm a true-blue Tifosa. I miss MS though.
- Scared Of
- Running out of time when I set myself deadlines. I always seem to need an extra day.
- Happiest When
- I read what I've written and can wonder 'where did that come from?'

Shock to the system
We arrived in Ljubliana late on a wet afternoon without prebooked hotel or prebooked hire car.
In the tourist info centre at the train station the woman was incredibly patient and persistant as she rang every place on her books. She made it clear that two grandparents with a grandchild needed somewhere to sleep for one night.
The line of other customers was growing and I was embarrassed at holding them up but still the woman at the counter persisted on our behalf.
Finally she had success and gave us directions. The price was unbelievaby reasonable considering the whole city was full of tourists. (Still can't fathom why it would be so full) and it was in walking distance with free internet & hot buffet breakfast included.
We set off, map in hand, dragging our wheeled suitcases behind us. Across the road , around a corner, passed a building covered in coloured graffitti with barbed wire on top of the brick fence, we kept going until we reached a low chain that spanned a muddy parking lot with plastic and paper blown against more graffittied walls. This couldn't be the place. It was. With no choice - and night closing in, we entered the building.
The receptionist was friendly and the place seemed to be clean, There were regular people as guest, well dressed, maybe some a tad eccentric and obviously literate as the row of computers was fully occupied.
Our 'cell' the girl called it was on the first floor - down the long, narrow corridor and up the stairs. 'The door on the stairs is always looked so you will need to use your key and please return your towels and sheets to reception in the morning.' There were two sets of stairs to climb and we came into another long narrow corridor . The floor drained into the centre. At one end were the showers - men's opposite the women. Thick doors lined each side of the corridor. I began to feel claustrophobic. Some doors stood open to reveal locked iron bars behind which I saw wooden benches and mattresses against the wall and a tiny port hole window.
We found our 'cell' at the very end and unlocked the door and the iron gate. The third bench-bed was reached by a ladder. It was difficult to spread the sheets when one is crouched under the roof. Anyway we dragged the other mattresses onto the 'beds' and made them up, locked both gate and door and determined to be out of there by daybreak. There was no question in my mind we were in jail.
When we talked about it to our cousin, later, he said, "You were in Celica - the most famous and best hostel in Europe. They have maintained the atmosphere of the old military prison.
So we must have had a great experience, afterall, but one I wouldn't have opted for and possibly once was enough.1 Comment 516 days

Not all smooth sailing
The train trip from Budapest to Slovenia was direct and would take 6-7hours so we decided to go first class and relax. Big mistake! I was looking forward to the Hungarian food in the dining car but the journey was so eventful there was no time to eat anything other than those very expensive chips I bought at the station. Due to track work we had 6 changes. 4 trains and 2 buses. Two of the trains were decorated in colourful graffiti and one of the buses was very old and smelled of leaking diesel. Trying to juggle three large over weight suitcases as we ran from train to train trying to find the right one without officials to guide us -- we relied on other passengers-- proved exhausting, especially for my husband who had to lift the bags (or throw them) onto the trains when there was no platform.
I don't know how the rail system managed but we arrived at our destination just 10 minutes late. A short taxi ride brought us to our 4 star hotel. There was no lift and no porter. Our room was on the third floor. 45 stairs!
It's not funny. My poor husband. He had to help my granddaughter and me. How he cursed my souvenirs. We slept well that night and woke the next morning ready to explore Ptuj, Slovenia's oldest town and the castle on which I based the inner bailey of my fort in The Unhewn Stone. see pic
