GO GRANNY GO!!
Mavis Paterson AKA Granny Mave is one remarkable women who was born in Glasgow Scotland on the 24th May 1938 where she grew up to train to be a nurse but she has lived in Dumfries for the last 40years in what she refers as ‘her log cabin by the sea!’. Granny Mave went on to have 3 children and now has 3 grandchildren. In 1979 she started a quest to raise money for charities that where close to her heart.
Next Year it will be Granny Maves 70th birthday and when her daughter asked what she would like as a party or present Granny Mave replied “well I always wanted to go to Canada” so she decided that she would set herself a challenge of riding a bicycle 6,000 miles from the west starting in Vancouver and finishing in the east - St John’s New Finland. Granny Mave will be doing all this to raise money for Macmillan Cancer care and will be funding the trip herself selling cards & pictures in around her local area that she has made in her spare time and all her expensive will come out of her own pocket.
Granny Mave has cycled, run and walked to raise money for charities she also did an abseiling with some friends last year and raised over £55,000, at the age of 65 she learnt to ski and canoed 80miles last year on the Dordogne River in France.
Granny Mave did a cycle ride for the Leonard Cheshire disability charity in Uganda and while she was over there thought she would climb Kilimanjaro just because she could she was 61 years young at the time!!!
Granny Mave goes to The Ryan Centre Gym in Stranraer three times a week they have supplied her free membership and a personal trainer to make sure she is in peak fitness for her cycle ride. After Christmas will be touring schools in her local area trying to get kids involved and making awareness of how important it is to keep fit.
I know myself and I’m sure that anyone who has chance to meet this lady will agree that she shows astounding bravery, strength and a fun loving personality which lights up any room she is in and her slogan is “ I just want to laugh through the rest of my life ! “
Granny Mave is looking for any help on her quest and the first thing she needs is a bike!!
