ICTU 'Better Fairer Way' campaign
The ICTU campaign for a 'Social Solidarity Pact' to include job creation, job protection, an economic stimulus package and opposition to pay and welfare cuts and pension protection, is now gathering momentum and will initially focus on a national protest/demonstration on Friday, 6th November at 2.30pm.
NATIONAL PROTEST RALLIES
There will be eight official regional demonstrations taking place in the following locations on the 6th November at 2.30pm:
Dublin Parnell Square
Waterford The Glen
Tullamore County Hall
Cork Connolly Hall
Limerick The Cathedral
Sligo The Blue Lagoon
Dundalk The Fairgreen

Lets get the largest turnout possible on the 6th! This time, not just private and public sector workers, but also the unemployed, and all those pn social welfare including pensioners, and all those in the community sector, which has also been savaged by cuts, all of us out that day. This time it won't just be a token 1-day stoppage and march to let off steam. The time for that has passed. It's just the start of a long campaign.

Up coming Protest
We wish to announce that our campaign group, are holding a protest on Saturday 26th of September at 1pm ,
Location main road out side hospital.
Reason for our protest to to demand that all closures be reversed.
We want the theater reopened and also St Joseph's ward to also be reopened.
"This Government is cutting everything they can get their hands on. Just €9.6 million is what
it would take to put front-line services back into Crumlin hospital. Over €50 billion is what they
are giving to bankers and developers,"

PRESS RELEASE
On hearing in the news today that expenses our TDs have ran up come to the value of nearly 9.2 million.
I want to go on record as a mother and a campaigner but most importantly a Irish citizen That i am utterly
disgusted, I have been campaign for the right of our children to have front line services restored to Our Lady's Children's Hospital
Crumlin for the last few months, hearing over and over again how money has been wasted in this country by the people who
we once trusted.
No more will i believe the promises these people make to me as a irish citizen, No more should we the irish people sit back
and let this farce continue.
They tell us our country is in economic crises that we have to make cuts, They cut the health service for our children, they cut the education
services for our children. But yet do they cut their expenses ? By what has come out in the news clearly NOT.
This is why Save Our Lady's Children's Hospital Campaign will continue to fight for the sick children of this country.
We will fight to have St Joseph"s ward reopened, we will fight to have the operating theater that was closed reopened.
We will fight to make sure every child in Ireland receives the health care they deserve.

OECD Report confirms State’s failure of young children – Ó Caoláin
by
Marty Gahan
September 2, 20090 Replys 9 weeks
Sinn Féin Dáil leader and spokesperson on Children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has said that the OECD’s first ever report on the well being of children in its 30 member countries confirms that successive Governments have failed younger children, with this State among the bottom five for spending on children in their vital younger years.
Deputy Ó Caoláin said:
“It is a cause of shame that the wealth of the Celtic Tiger years which flowed into State coffers was so badly misused when it should have been invested wisely in providing for greatly improved health, education and social services for children.
“The OECD Report shows that this State is among the five out of 30 OECD countries that spend least on children. It reflects very poorly on the well being of children in this State, especially those who are disadvantaged. This leads to greater problems in later life, including our very high rate of suicide among young men, as highlighted in this report.
“Having under-invested in the welfare of children during the boom we now see the Fianna Fáil/Green Government preparing to slash spending in health and education, increasing class sizes, cutting special needs teachers, withdrawing schemes for disadvantaged pupils such as book grants, restricting medical card entitlements, targeting Child Benefit and much more.
“These cuts will compound the problems for children caused by overcrowded classrooms and inadequate school buildings, lack of accessible childcare, inadequate child protection and over-stretched children’s social care services.
“Investment in children is required to ensure both the rights of all children and real recovery for Ireland beyond the recession.”

Children lose their home as HSE cuts funding
by
Marty Gahan
Published Date: 26 August 20090 Replys 10 weeks
By Laura Keys
TWO children have been removed from their home and 18 skilled workers have lost their jobs in the latest round of funding cuts to hit Kilkenny.
The Holy Family Centre on the Callan Road, Kil-kenny, which provides full-time residential care to up to 14 children with learning disabilities, has been shut down after the Health Service Executive (HSE) slashed its funding.
All 18 staff members were placed on protective notice about six weeks ago and were served with red-undancy notices last week.
There were two children being cared for at the centre when the news came through and the last remaining child was removed from the home yesterday (Tuesday).
It is believed one of the children was placed into foster care, while the other has been moved to a different residential care facility.
The children were referred to the centre by the health care services as they couldn't be cared for properly in their own homes for various reasons.
This was the norm until about two years ago, when new referrals were halted due to funding cuts.
SIPTU assistant branch organiser Colleen Minihan said while it was disappointing that so many "very highly skilled workers are coming on to the job market in a glut", the real losers in the situation were the children and families who would be affected.
"We're very disappointed with the situation because the Holy Family Centre provides a vital service and there's always going to be a need for somewhere to look after children with disabilities," she said.
Talks
Ms Minihan said the centre's board of management had been in talks with the HSE in recent months about the possibility of amalgamating the centre with another nearby facility to save money, but these talks had been abandoned.
"There is a huge demand for these services and now the HSE is refusing to fund it," she said.
SIPTU has 15 members at the Holy Family Centre and Ms Minihan said the union had to enter negotiations with the board of management to secure adequate redundancy packages for the staff.
"While the centre is wholly funded by the HSE, the staff are not HSE employees," she explained.
It is believed staff secured packages worth four weeks pay per year of service, plus statutory redundancy and minimum notice.
Staff at the centre who have now been made redundant included a director, 10 full-time and three part-time care staff, one full-time and one part-time housekeeper and a part-time secretary/financial officer.
The centre is managed by a board of directors drawn from the local community including the Ossory Community Services Trust, the HSE, Holy Family Congregation, medical, legal and other professions.
The Holy Family Centre was established by Bishop Peter Birch in 1966 and in 1997, a new purpose-built centre catering for 14 children was created on the site. The building will now be returned to the Diocese of Ossory.

hiya... this is a very good page...
the government should have no right to close a children's hospital... there are sick kids that actually need this care and they shouldnt be allowed to take this from them...
the government are useless really and truly if they wanna take something away that is keeping children alive and helping them to get better...
they are sick enough and dont need stress on top of it and their parents definalty dont need it ...
GOVERNMENT SHOULD COP ON TO THEMSELVES...
Keep on fighting guys

It's terrible this is happening. My brother has leukaemia and we live in Scotland so he's had most of his treatment at Yorkhill, however, he had a spell in Our Ladies and the staff were fantastic. The place is a miracle and to even think of closing it down is a selfish decision by the govt. Save Our Ladies!
hello,
this hospital saved my life in 2000 . i was diagnosed with cancer at 9 and if it wasnt for this hospital i wouldnt be writing this message today. I think its its an absolute disgrace wats goin on today , Recession or no bloody recession a decent health service for the children of the country is one of the fundamental resources neede din this country.

Cool video. I hope the Government see it and are shamed into action. Keep up all your hard work.
Yes I read this article in "Mail on Sunday". I always buy this paper, as they have a great campaign for sick children. This Government is scum and only cares about money. When are voters going to learn?
