- The reason for this Sophie's Choice fundraising event been set up is down to one little poster I found myself reading in the early hours on a Sunday morning in the halls of the childrens hospital in Crumlin. On the poster there was a few short words;
'Please donate any spare crayons to the hospital. There isn't enough for the kids'
Sophie's Choice @ the Tivoli was outstanding!
You couldn't have asked for anything more from the people involved on the night. The solo acts brought there own sound and vibe to the stage bringing the crowd together. Followed by The Hot Sprockets, Penfold Dm & Red Kid each delivering there own unique sound that rock'd the Tivoli.. When you thought the night could get any better, Paddy Sheridan & John from Club NME pleased the crowd with there very different styles of Dj'in in the form of a Silent Disco...

Sophie's Choice, Saturday 20th Sept @ The Tivoli Theatre
The reason for this Sophie's Choice fundraising event been set up is down to one little poster I found myself reading in the early hours on a Sunday morning in the halls of the childrens hospital in Crumlin. On the poster there was a few short words;
'Please donate any spare crayons to the hospital. There isn't enough for the kids'
Been parent that has spent a lot of time in the hospital since my little daughter was born, I knew then I had to do something and here we are. Last year I raised funds to buy every child that spent Christmas in Crumlin hospital a present which was anything from PSP's, Nintendo DS's, Dora The Explorer down to a babies rattler.
On Saturday, September 20th , a host of Ireland's finest musicians, including Red Kid, Penfold DM, The Hot Sprockets, Lisa McLaughlin, Bill Coleman, Phil Kerrigan and the renowned *Headphone Disco, will gather in the Tivoli Theatre to raise €40,000 for Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. The concert, Sophie's Choice, will help raise money to enable the redesigning of a parents and family area in the hospital. This much needed space will provide an area for parents who currently have no where to relax, reflect or simply recharge while their sick child is sleeping, or in theatre.

*Headphone Disco: On the night Paddy Sheridan and a Club NME Dj will be Dj'in at the same time but play totally different styles of music. Paddy will be delivering his style of house music/dirty disco on channel 1, which will be a guaranteed crowd pleaser but if are more interested in throwing some moves around the dance floor to a soul enhancing mash up of the best in new music {think Foals, Crystal Castles, Fight Like Apes & Vampire Weekend}, while also saluting the influential masters of the past {think Bowie, The Clash, Joy Division & The Stone Roses}. switch your headphones over to the Club NME Dj on channel 2 and feel free to sing at the top of your lungs!
What is a Headphone Disco?: A simple concept with a spectacular affect. Take a room full of clubbers, arm them all with a set of wireless headphones, have two separate DJ's broadcast to them live via two dedicated FM channels and watch the utterly surreal spectacle that unfolds. A mass of humanity, throwing moves, pulling shapes and singing along to what appears to everyone else to be... complete silence! Welcome to the hugely popular phenomenon that is, 'Headphone Disco'.

Sophie's Choice... The reason behind it all...
I am sure you are curious as to why I would be keen to get involved with this great cause; it’s because my daughter Sophie was diagnosed with Hypopituitarism – a life threatening condition - when she was only 3 days old. Hypopituitarism occurs when the pituitary gland in the centre of the brain is under developed. This is the master gland, which in turn produces the hormones which you need every day to live. Without hormones, you cannot laugh, cry, feel, smell, or engage in any of the normal emotions that we take for granted every day. With medication, these hormones can be replaced to a certain degree, but for example, if Sophie picks up a slight cold it can cause major problems as her brain does not know to send the necessary hormone increase to combat it. When the pituitary gland is under developed this in turn leads to the under development of the optic nerve, leading to 60% of children with this problem being born blind. We are lucky that Sophie has only been affected in one eye and has full vision in her left eye.
At the age of one, Sophie was diagnosed with Epilepsy, and it is only when you watch your child go through something like this, while you stand by, helpless, it is only then you understand how much you would give to change places with your child, so they didn’t have to suffer these terrible fits. The reason I want to put on this event is to give back just a little something for all the work that Crumlin Hospital have done for my daughter and our family. Without their professionalism, their kindness and their understanding, Sophie and many other children like her would not be here today. The hospitals team is doing a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances and I would like to raise as much awareness as possible to fund research so that the life of the next child who is diagnosed with Hypopituitarism or Epilepsy might be a little easier to bear, by both the child, and their parents.0 Comments 730 days
