the same dress for 3 days.
Our bender started on Thursday night. Me, Nicky, Dan & Jake went to watch a friends gig at The Ginglik in Shepherds Bush. It was a fabulous show, followed by a great after party at Bush Studios. I don't know how it happened but at about 8am we were still at Bush.... I just have a vague memory of singing through the mics with "my name is Raj" to the hangers on of the party. I'm sorry for whoever had to endure that. Cause the studio doesn't have any windows I had no idea it was morning and time just didn't exist. Eventually someone looked at their watch and to our horror we saw that it was 10am and we were rehearsing in 1 hour. We booked a cab, missioned to Nicky's to pick up his Uke, to Dan's to get his guitar and to mine to get my acoustic, touthbrush and touthpaste (which later leaked all over my bag causing eternal stickyness).
It was the kind of rehearsal that left me feeling more confused than before but it was all going to be ok cause we hopped into 3 cars and started on our way through lovely Friday afternoon traffic and beating sunshine to Brighton, by way of Nettle's (for blankets and wee's).
I'm not going to lie, I slept in the car and woke to the beautiful seaside. We unloaded our masses of gear into the little venue, which was so random, it had a vegan cafe and a sort of kids play area upstairs. The promotors had failed to tell us that it was a stripped down venue so we had to cram everything onto the stage and we were falling off and getting tangeled up in wires in soundcheck.
Our next mission was to find a hotel were we could get one room in which we could all sleep (all 8 of us). Phil (boyfriend of drummer, Net) was our organiser and leader on this venture. He found a lovely Indian B&B. As the smell of curry oozed from the kitchen we pondered what they would serve for breakfast, egg samosa's?! However, the room key was obtained, fish and chips eaten on the sea-front and a strange but beautiful gig was played. People are lovely and friendly in Brighton and we made some new pals along the way. Thank you to Barry for taking photo's and the band's friends who came to watch. Thank you for those who dorve up from London.
It must have been about 1am when we found our way to a pub that had earlier promised us a lock in. We spotted a piano through the window and decided that we WERE going to have our after party there. The place was shut but we knocked on the back door and by some miracle they were still up and serving and we even had an audience. Nettle whipped out her snare and brushes, Nicky his uke, Dan and Joey the acoustics, Sandy an egg, Jake sat his ass on the piano (which was one semi-tone out of tune and caused great confusion) I grabbed a tambourine and we were off... It was probably one of the greatest night's of my life. The punters in the pub started out by completely ignoring us but we eventually got into their socks and by 3am we ere all singing and dancing around... we must have walked back to the hotel at around 4.30... we ran around the corridors of the hotel causing trouble for longer still until eventually we fell for a few hours... piled up like sardines.
Sneaking everyone out in the morning was messy and unsubtle and Sandy and Joey got a real telling off from the hotel owner. It went along the lines of "you took girls to your room, we were going to call the police.." In fact "girl's" is an exaggeration, Net was well asleep by this point so it was one girl, me, but i can make enough noise for a group of drunken Brightonians I'm sure. We drove back to London, tired and jaded. That was yesterday. Folk and Roll baby!

gig review and never wanting to leave Abbey Road...
Hello,
Just wanted to update everyone on a few things. We are mid flow at Abbey Road. I'm a bit shocked at how beautiful everything sounds. We have legendary people working on this album and it's really starting to show... all our hard work was extremely noted and we rattled off 19 songs in our first 4 days with the whole band... in our next batch (back in tomorrow) will be putting fairy dust on the tracks... grand piano's, harps, bv's. Everyone at Abbey Road says it is so unusual to get a band recording pretty much everything live in this day and age and it's really refreshing. But although it's hard to pull off it's so worth it and listening back you can feel the energy between the 7 of us and the tracks have so much life and are so fun and intense.
I think we're all gonna be really sad to leave it's been a great, great experience and a brilliant opportunity for a first album recording.
So the lovely James has written this about me and the band at our Rock Garden gig a few weeks back:
"Next up is Lyla Foy, a 21-year-old singer songwriter from central London. I'm sceptical of female singers at the moment, I call it 'NashLily' syndrome if you will but it seems that every single one in some way or another borrows an attribute from these two vixens of the note. Lyla sidesteps this bracket neatly and the only thing she has in common is the knack to pen a catchy tune. Lyla doesn't do this alone, she is backed up on a cramped stage by 6 other musicians who demonstrate they are more than able, with each song highlighting their talent. Fear not, for there are no cymbals on fire or lengthy guitar solos played with teeth, but musical vignettes with real quirk, 'Back and Forth' and pop charm, Fifteen Minutes of Fame'.
The band rattle through tracks 'Fly on The Wall', 'Unladylikely' and 'Wild One' which are due to form the backbone of Lyla's debut album. Where her counterparts have recorded in their bedrooms, garage or on a cheap four track, Lyla has her sights set much higher and is due to begin recording in the coming weeks at Abbey Road no less.
Speaking with her after the performance I ask about the prospect of working at such a musical Mecca and she isn't fazed in the slightest. I comment on the band's performance and she reveals that the current line-up has only been together a month, but that 14 hour day rehearsals have enabled them to steal a march on their more established rivals here tonight.
Lyla has a steely determination and her ambition is unquestionable. Five minutes in her company and you are left dizzy and enthused. A fan of Joanna Newsom, Wallis Bird, Imogen Heap and KT Tunstall, Lyla regularly uses the internet to find fellow up-and-coming artists and is a music fan as well as musician.
When asked if music has always been her love she shares with me the day her career as an ice-skater finished and the day her career as a musician started: "I was fourteen or fifteen and chubby, wearing Lycra outfits made me look like a hamster".
The ice-skating world's loss is our gain. This girl has talent and is an A&Rs dream: bags of talent, fresh ideas and breathlessly beautiful with a knowing innocence. With the right people to oversee her it won't be long before Lyla Foy blossoms into full bloom."
