Hey! great page, didn't know this existed, only found you by CHANCE! My children and I have lived in social housing all our lives...we are accommodated comfortably now, but only because a local charity that seeks to support people in need helped us, and we hadta fight, despite the fact that both myself, and my youngest son are disabled. I'm certain that if we weren't, we would be in deep water regards accommodation, but still, when we were searching, the council were hopeless, we were helped by a housing association in the end. Lack of public/social housing hasta be the problem...without it, what're we gonna do? Sorry to see this page isn't better supported. Much love, Jennie. xx

    I think he Government should build more decent homes;

There are too many homeless and people in poor standards of living in Britain.

Government, Councils placing the blame onto others - even blaming the homeless or keeping people in temporary housing for years or substandard living when they are able to to cope for themselves, saying you can't be moved now - you just arn't ready - its you who needs to change not us - reality is there is a housing shortage in Britain and the Government and Councils should own up to it.

Councils turn people away from their doors - even if they have faced severe harassment in another area - saying there is no local connection. Telling them - go back to where you came from and suffer.

Then what happens? Social Services take their kids off them - cause they have no home or if they go back the kids will be in danger. Parents left homeless to try and get housing on their own - its a disgrace.

Shelter's workers are on strike this week due to the organisations pay cuts and redundancies. Shelter's new terms - pay cuts of up to £5,700 per worker, longer working week (adds to 3 weeks extra a year), bullying tactics of management (sign or leave post). These changes in working conditions as well as a change in any person-centred values will result in Shelter loosing all their essential, highly skilled workforce.

However, Shelter's financial postion seems as strong as ever- £50m turnover last year, headquarters refurbishment last year (£600,000) and finally Shelter management awarded themselves a huge pay increase, rumoured to be in the region of £20,000 per person!

Finally, Shelter historically has been one of the most innovative and forward thinking charity's that has independently brought about change for individuals and society. However under this new regime this can not continue, changes in funding means split loyalities!

    Support the strike action!

I'd love to see greater regulation and scrutiny of housing associations, to ensure more money finds its way into improving social housing, and less to improving the lives of the fat cats running them. There are some decent ones out there, unfortunately they are few and far between. This is what makes Shelter's work so important.

    Hi Nick W

I'd be interested to hear in what way you feel your family is being exploited by Shelter?

Shelter campaigns on the street, lobbies politicians, highlights housing issues and the problems that many people face in this country, and suggests policy changes in order to try to change the housing situation.

Last year, the government committed to building 3 million new homes in Britain by 2020, thanks to the work of Shelter and other housing charities.

Real change is what Shelter aims for, and that takes time - especially given just how bad the housing situation in Britain is at the moment. If you need help and/or advice, there's a lot of information on the Shelter website: www.shelter.org.uk/advice.

"b) Stop overcrowding and poor conditions 11%" WOW!!

It's nice to see how children like mine are considered insignificant and that it's acceptable for current ideologies to blight their lives.

    As a point of interest:

We receive no priorities whatsoever to improve out standards of living, do you?

We have no way out; we are trapped in poor overcrowded housing. Do you?

Do you have the answers then?

Whilst my children will be raised in such scandalous and despicable ways, because the outdated 1935 definition of overcrowding is exploited by local governments. It's acceptable for us to live in squalor, it's acceptable for my children to suffer and not be given any opportunities to improve their lives.

It appears to me that whilst some highlight such issues, they haven’t made any difference, nor will they, but appear to glory in exploiting families like mine.

    Shame on you
