- The Tour de France is the world's best-known cycling race, a three week long road race that covers a circuit of most areas around France, and sometimes neighbouring countries. The race is broken into stages from one town to another, each of which is an individual race. The time taken by cyclists to complete each stage becomes a cumulative total in order to decide the outright winner at the end of the Tour.
Together with the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) and Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain), the Tour de France is one of the three major stage races and the longest of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) calendar at three weeks each. While the other two European Grand Tours are well-known in Europe, they are relatively unknown outside the continent, and even the UCI World Cycling Championship is familiar only to cycling enthusiasts. The Tour de France, in contrast, has long been a household sporting name around the globe, known even to those not generally interested in cycling.

2008 Tour De France Teams Have Been Named..
The 20 teams for the 2008 Tour de France have been named by the organiser, Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO).
There has been no reprieve for Astana, which ASO said would not be welcome at any of its races.
Slipstream and Barloworld make the cut but there's no room for Dutch squad Skil-Shimano, which impressed at Paris-Nice last week.

The 2008 stages
The route
Running from Saturday July 5th to Sunday July 27th 2008, the 95th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,500 kilometres.
These 21 stages have the following profiles:
* 10 flat stages,
* 5 mountain stages,
* 4 medium mountain stages,
* 2 individual time-trial stages.
Distinctive aspects of the race
* 4 mountain finishes,
* 2 rest days,
* 82 kilometres of individual time-trials,
* 19 Category 1, Category 2 and highest level passes will be climbed.
10 new stop-over towns
Auray, Aigurande, Brioude, Prato Nevoso (Italy), Cuneo (Italy), Jausiers, Embrun, Roanne, Cérilly, Étampes.

Lance showed us that he is getting stronger as the days go by in the Giro and now hes only getting stronger and hes 2nd in the tour after 3 n a bit years out off top end cycling like dats impressive...good performance from contador and Lance in the team time trial
Astana are not going to be beaten...they are just too stron with three potential winners....lance, contador and kloden.....seems to me lance will be on the podium in paris if he is at his best, but contador will also want to win. will be interesting seeing who ends up working for who!!!
IMO lance is doing this for all the right reasons, critics should shut up about doping and EPO. I hope he wins for all suffering from cancer!
