  • "Textured & elegant... approached with great energy by Sean McNally" IRISH THEATRE MAGAZINE ***

    TITUS
    Carmelite Community Centre
    Mon 10 - Sat 15 Sep; 8:00pm

The subject of Aidan Harney's tale is likely to intrigue: how one Dutch friar named Titus Brandsman, who visited White Friar Street in the 1930s, went on to rally against Nazism and protest in Dachau during the 1940s. A man influenced by Carmelite thought, the significance of the setting is not lost, although it remains unclear just how important, if at all, Titus’s trip to Dublin was on his subsequent actions.

Harney distils a great deal of material into an hour and a half, mounting historical documents in the entrance hall; and his writing style is textured and elegant. The onerous task of playing Titus and a dozen or so other characters is approached with great energy by Sean McNally. Enthusiasm aside, the performance lacks a theatricality that is not helped by the living room-like space and poor direction. As if to liven things up, a number of images are projected onto the back wall, although they are both too high and too obscure to keep straining.

Perhaps the play’s greatest difficulty is its dense textuality: there’s interesting stuff here that would probably be much more rewarding as a biography or as an extended piece of fiction.

  • REVIEW: "A testimony of INCREDIBLE courage!" THE IRISH TIMES ***

    Titus
    Carmelite Hall

Aidan Harney's dramatic monologue, played by Sean McNally, tells the true story of a Carmelite priest and mystic who was killed in Dachau by the Nazis. Titus Brandsma was Dutch, son of a farmer, and made his way through the church ranks, against bureaucratic opposition, to become an eminent theologian and university administrator.

Then came Hitler and the Nazis, to whom he was implacably opposed. He toured Europe and Germany preaching opposition to their racist outrages, and was arrested and sent to the concentration camp. There, he suffered terribly, and died by lethal injection.

The actor traces his life, moving back and forth between youth and final years. He plays Titus and other characters, particularly in the camp, with conviction. This is a fervent testimony, more tract than theatre, to a saintly man of incredible courage, moral and physical. ( Until Sept 15 )

Thank you Aidan and Sean or Sean and Aidan. It is a fantastic show that has stayed with me. It's still got me thinking about the story and the sheer humanity of the man. Thank you for bringing it to Dublin and for telling it in such a compelling fantastic show. More please! xM
