  • Taken from Resident Advisor

Will Saul has been announced as the next DJ in line to mix an installment for the Balance series.

You may remember the fuss back in March over Joris Voorn's 100-plus track mix for the Balance mix series, which now leaves Simple and Aus boss Will Saul the somewhat unenviable task of producing the follow-up. Saul has returned to the format favoured by former entrants SOS and Lee Burridge by penning a three disc mix, which takes in a host of styles and sounds.

We cornered Saul for a brief run-down on what to expect from the mix.

RA: What tack did you take with the mix?

WS: I wanted to take the opportunity of a triple mix CD (I needed 3 CDs to fit in half the amount of tracks that Joris used!) to try and showcase all the different styles and vibes of electronic music (and beyond) that I'm into. The mixes touch on disco (CD 1), organic dub/dubstep/house/soul (CD 2) and then techy, trippy, melancholic and euphoric house/techno/dubstep for CD 3.

I wanted to make it as timeless as possible so I've included a lot of gems from the last ten years of DJ'ing and collecting music and pieced it together with how I'm playing now and tried to make it all sound fresh and current.

I did the mix on Ableton but I wanted to avoid the overly polished/clean sound of a sequenced/automated mix so I bought a controller and recorded the mixes in real time so all the volume,EQ and dub FX are added in real time.

RA: Why did you decide to do a mix with the Balance series instead of, say, your own label?

WS: Running two labels myself I know what a big job marketing and licensing a triple mix CD is. It's something I'd always dreamed of doing in the future but the Balance guys asked me now so I jumped at the chance. The Balance series has a really well established global fan base so it was also an amazing opportunity for me to reach people that haven't heard me DJ or the music I make and release. I had total free reign on the tracks I selected for the mix and Dan from Balance has done an amazing job of clearing all the old/rare tracks I requested so it's been an absolute pleasure working with them.

Silicone Soul are the internationally renowned and much-loved DJ & production duo Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie. Pioneering quality underground house and techno for the past decade they have proven to be one of the most popular acts on their home label, Soma Records. They are synonymous with dancefloor destruction and guest constantly around the globe. They have held residencies at La Terrrazza (Barcelona), Circo Loco (DC10, Ibiza), The Arches and The Sub Club (Glasgow) and now the famous Café d’Anvers (Antwerp).

Equally so, the duo are renowned for their production skills, with an idiosyncratic take on the house/techno sound that continues to evolve …deep, emotive electronic music.

Their worldwide chart-busting single, Right On, Right On! is now regarded a house classic. It gained them full international recognition in 2001 and catapulted them in to dance music’s A-list and into the conscious of the mainstream. Craig and Graeme however held true to their underground roots, refused to compromise their ideology and stuck a firm two fingers up to the commercial house music scene, even refusing to appear on ‘Top Of The Pops’ (BBC1).

It is this attitude, along with an insatiable appetite for new sounds and ideas that keeps them firmly at the cutting edge of underground electronic music. They have produced three critically acclaimed albums of sublime deep house, techno and electronica all on Soma Records… A Soul Thing (2000), Staring Into Space (2005) and Save Our Souls (2006).

Since the release of Save Our Souls, in late 2006 and in-between constant touring, they have focused attentions on their Darkroom Dubs label. Regarded now by many as one of the UK’s most forward thinking electronic labels, it has become a formidable source of house and techno music. With recent artists including Sei A, Gary Beck,
Jet Project, Afrilounge and Mirror Music.

The guys are now back in the studio working on their fourth album. This is a landmark year for Silicone Soul as it marks their tenth anniversary, so expect some fresh surprises in 2009…

Glasgow born Gary Beck has been producing electronic music since early 2002. Using mostly keyboards, Drum Machines, Hardware Synths and software programs, Gary's first release 'Stick to the Reggae' was signed up by Philadelphia Dub House label 'Worship Recordings', home to artists such as Hakan Lidbo, Pete Moss and Hipp-E.

Gary has since gone on to record for M_nus, Soma Recordings, Edit Select and many more. His tracks have received worldwide support from respected artists such as Richie Hawtin, James Holden, Laurent Garnier, Adam Beyer, and Yousef. When Gary performs, his style is very much his own, fusing bass driven Techno with the more experimental quirky house side of things.

With further remixes, DJ dates and releases on the horizon for labels such as Soma, Darkroom Dubs, Edit Select, the future looks set to be exciting for Gary. As a side project, Gary also likes to record under the pseudonym 'Ruskin Franks' for the more down tempo experimental side of his music.

Where
Headway with WILL SAUL (Simple Records) @ The Reading Rooms, Dundee
Details
Will Saul is the producer and DJ behind Simple Records and Aus Music. His sound is based in deep dubdiscohousetechno with flashes of soul and irresistible melodies that hark back to the early days of Detroit (from Motown to Planet E). Over the last few years Will has gained an admirable reputation as not only a show-stealing DJ, but also a talented A&R and producer. He’s remixed for Chicken Lips, Jesse Rose, Manuel Tur, Chymera, Solomun, Steve Lawler, Phonique and Marc Romboy to name just a few. Remixes for Appleblim, The Juan Maclean (DFA) and Cortney Tidwell are also in the pipeline and will be released before the summer. ‘Zippo' by Will and Mike Monday was released on Buzzin' Fly in February and received wide spread acclaim and notably made the top 20 in the UK independent sales chart. Will was resident at the legendary End club in London for many years before it closed it’s doors in January. He starts a new London residency at Cable in May.

Will was born in Taunton, Somerset in 1978. Always surrounded by music, his musical path has developed gradually. Growing up his parents encouraged him to play the piano, sax and timpani, each of which he disliked at the time. He started buying records at eight - motown, soul, R&B, film scores - and diligently recorded the Top 40 on Sunday afternoons. Before his teens he’d begun collecting hip-hop and by sixteen was into dance. Trekking to clubs across England every weekend inspired him to get a job and save up enough cash for two turntables and a mixer. For such a passionate collector, DJing was a revelation. Two years later he won Muzik’s mixtape talent contest Bedroom Bedlam, having progressed his sound from lush, jazzy grooves and leftfield oddities to include deep, dubby breaks and broken- beats. After two years working in Sony International’s A&R department he left to set up a label with friends. They called it Simple, to reflect their open-minded intention to release good music, of whatever genre. It was while working at the legendary Koobla records, and then the fantastic Phonica, that he had his eyes fully opened to the wonderful world of house and techno. At the time the scene was being re-invigorated by producers such as Mathew Jonson, who Will quickly employed for his first remix.

Simple Records' musical focus is futuristic house and techno for the deeper end of the dance floor. As well as his own tracks, including 'Sequential Circus', 'Mbira' and 'Pause', the constant evolution of the label now sees Ian Pooley, Adam Marshall, Motorcitysoul and James Priestley & Dan Berkson joining the core roster. Over the course of 6 years and well over 50 single releases Will has commissioned remixes from Jeff Samuel, Argy, Gui Boratto, Sebo K, Isolee, Konrad Black, Jimpster, John Tejada, Tobias, Recloose, Tiger Stripes, Martin Landsky, Dixon, Roman Flugel, I:Cube and many, many more of underground house and techno's most influential producers.
