Ola Brunkert
We are very sad to hear the news of the untimely demise of drummer Ola Brunkert, who contributed to every ABBA album and toured with the band on all their major tours.
Ola Brunkert, one of Sweden's most frequently employed session drummers of the 1970s, died in his home in Majorca, Spain, in March 2008. He was 61.
Ola Brunkert was born in 1946. He had been a musician ever since his teens, starting out with jazz in the late 1950s. He became a member of the blues band Slim's Blues Gang, with whom he made his first appearance on a record release: an eponymous 1966 EP. Ola then joined a bona fide pop band, Science Poption, who released six singles, enjoying a major radio hit with a song entitled 'Buckingham Palace'. By the end of 1967, Science Poption had dissolved, and Ola Brunkert went on to a band called Grapes Of Wrath. At the tail end of the band's brief career, they were joined by guitarist Janne Schaffer, who went on to form a jazz-pop group called Opus III together with Ola.
Together with Janne Schaffer, Ola then went on to become a frequently used session drummer. His roots within pop and rock as well as jazz gave him a versatility matched by few others, and he provided a solid beat on recordings with a diverse assortment of artists. Both Ola and Janne contributed to the very first ABBA recording, "People Need Love" in 1972. Ola then went on to play on each and every ABBA album - with the exception of bassist Rutger Gunnarsson, he is the only musician to do so.
Ola also played with ABBA on their tours of Europe and Australia in 1977, North America and Europe in 1979, and Japan in 1980.
Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson were both very saddened by the news of Ola's death. "It's incredibly sad that Ola is gone. He meant a great deal to ABBA", said Benny Andersson. "He was a very good and creative musician. He was one of the best", said Björn Ulvaeus.

ABBA - The Album - Deluxe Edition to be released
ABBA's 1977 watershed album, featuring hits such as 'The Name Of The Game' and 'Take A Chance On Me', will be released with bonus tracks and an accompanying DVD of rare and previously unreleased performances.
October 2007 is the projected release date for the Deluxe Edition of ABBA - The Album, originally released 30 years ago, in 1977.
In line with last year's Deluxe Edition of Arrival, ABBA - The Album will be extended with six bonus tracks and a DVD of rare and previously unreleased performances and news reports. The illustrated booklet features an extensive essay on the making of the album.
