Thomastown Paddlers was set up in 1996 by a small group of just 4 paddlers who lived in the local area. Over the years the club has grown to become one of the top canoe clubs in Ireland. In recent years the club has won the Riba-de-selle trophy 4 years in a row as well as enjoying success abroad also. In 2002 the club had its first international representative at a World Championships. Donnacha Brennan, competed at junior level in Zamora, Spain while in 2004 Michael Brennan competed in the same event in Bergen, Norway. The club has also had great achievements at the British Marathon Championships in the past years.
As well as canoeing, the club also part-takes in numerous hill-walks on the numerous and various mountains around the south-east of the country. Training and trips take place on a regular basis across the rivers of Kilkenny and Carlow on the Nore, Barrow and Kings.

- During the winter floods of 2007 the left wall of the weir in Thomastown collapsed causing a major drop in water levels up river. This has severely hindered our training and recreational stretch of river in Thomastown. There are several rumours as to wheather or not the weir will ever be rebuilt, but rumour has it that the local fishing club has a certain amount raised to put towards the rebuilding. Thomastown Paddlers has leant its support to the rebuilding of the weir in anyway it can and we all hope that our weir is back ASAP. Do the poll and lend your support!!
