- HWUSA ELECTIONS 2007
I am standing for President of Heriot-Watt University Students Association. After spending four years completing a degree in Physics, and then spending last year as Vice-President (Education & Welfare), I have the experience, commitment & passion to keep working for the benefit of all Heriot-Watt Students.
Below is some of the policies I am standing on. But more importantly, let me know what you think a President of HWUSA should be doing. This will be a year of unprecedented change for HWUSA, no matter who the president is, so tell me how you think we should look in two years time.
What ever your feelings, I would still be over the moon to see you voting. The more students engage with elections, the more HWUSA will be held accountable and be scrutinised by its membership. HWUSA really does make a big difference to the future student experience at Heriot-Watt, if you don't express an opinion now, then that future may well not be the one you want.
Cheers

FIGHTING FOR THE SMALL THINGS THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
Keeping Wednesday Afternoons Free
Reviewing and campaigning to make sure that Wednesday afternoons are actually kept free for Sports & Societies. These co-curricular activities are just important to a students employability as academic efforts.
Time is Money
Ever stood for 15 minutes waiting to get cash out in core? All ready skint so not willing to pay a charge? Don't quite understand why there isn't more than one bank machine in core? Me neither! I'll try my best to work with the University in installing more bank provisions.
<Keeping Graduation Special</b>
Some senior members of the University want to no longer announce degree classifications at graduations, a step I think towards making this day bland and meaningless. I caused a U-turn and the status quo now remains. Students work bloody hard to get their degree and many loved ones pay an extortionate amount of money to support us, why should we all be denied recognition of our efforts?
I am currently pushing for graduations to be far more personal and student orientated. I am working towards establishing a Student Award for students who make a difference effort their class mates; a Teaching Award for lecturers who have inspired students and for the graduation to conclude with a speech from someone students actually want to listen to... a student. Further more, I want to see the reduction in Honorary degrees presented as these have very little relevance to graduates.

FIGHTING TO CONTINUE IMPROVING ACADEMIC REPRESENTATION
Keeping academic representation at the heart of HWUSA
Class reps are now involved in extremely high level decisions making processes; from informing the new Student Administration Service, having full input into semseterisation and a Student Senate with over 50 people, under my leadership the Class Rep and School Officer systems have gone from strength to strength. With such a strong candidate for Vice-President (Education & Welfare), Talat Yaqoob, standing for election, a partnership that would improve these systems ten fold would be assured on my election.

I'm going to get you to add me to bebo... even if it's only this one! I support you!!!
Although I agree with what you wrote, "I would still be over the moon to see you voting" So long as people are involved in voting at all, and actually vote for who they think would do best, and not just apathetic. -
