I had a very interesting revelation the other Sabbath while I was at church. I was teaching my Busy bee class for the first time in my lifetime and guess what they were learning? How to be a good Adventurer for Jesus. But how do you become a good Adventurer for Jesus? If you be obedient, be kind, be pure, be true... and Jesus will take you to heaven.
REWIND.
First Juniors class I conducted, the lesson was about the prodigal son. But more importantly, about Grace. In particular, about the Father's eldest son, who stayed back and had done as asked by his father. Those who know the parable of the prodigal son know how the story goes - the son who stays behind becomes envious and despises his younger brother for leaving and his father for accepting his brother back, even though he was faithful and did as asked of him by his father.
I always identified myself with the brother who stayed behind because I felt his pain. Why is the unfaithful always rewarded for coming back yet those that stay are left hanging? I never quite grasped the concept that those who stayed behind were worse off because they weren't selfish and materialistic. I even applied it to church life and everyone in it. There were the kids that would 'go off the rails' and never turn up to church for yonks, deciding that the earthly pleasures that the devil offered were sweeter than anything God had instore for them in our church. Then one day a life-changing experience challenges their outlook on their actions and not too long after they are baptised and happy chappy front rowers again. Even those that had a foot in both worlds were reaping the benefits of getting the upper hand in anything church - standing up in the front of church, conducting services, leading out - all while living double lives. What about those of us who stayed faithful? Who are overlooked for the more 'popular' kids? Who are the afterthought when those 'cool kids' don't show up? Don't get me wrong, those that do come back deserve the pat on the back for returning and bleh but I surely did feel that older brother's pain.
New question - so what exactly is religion? A bunch of rules or basically guidelines someone way back when decided to construct to help keep us in line with what God expects of us? Nah! Somewhere along the line some diehard decided it was rules that we HAD to abide by otherwise eternal happiness was not attained.
HANG ON, but where does grace come in?
Bullshit. It is years later that I finally realise what it is that was missing.
Grace - God's free gift of love and forgiveness to us in the form of His son's crucifiction on the cross.
The father in the story of the prodigal son is willing to do anything to bring his son back home, and when the son realises his mistakes and returns, it is celebrations all around because there is no greater moment than seeing your son COME BACK home. God was willing to sacrifice something so special to Him in the hope that losers like us, all these years later, will realise just how much He loves us and come right back home. Yeah, it's great that you've stayed faithful and kept inside the lines but so what?! It isn't until you fully REALISE AND APPRECIATE the price that God has paid for you that it matters most. You can follow a bunch of rules and be fearful of God but if there's no personal connection WITH GOD, there isn't much point of your good deeds. Someone who radiates God let's His light shine from the inside out and therefore, his actions, his thoughts, his speech, reflects God's image.
Point? Realise God loves you, connect with Him from the inside out, and it won't be following rules anymore but reflecting Him.
Have I fully grasped this yet? I hope i have but only time will tell.
