  • Our Priorities For Meath

Meath East Young Fine Gael -Our Priorities for Meath

---An End to our rip-off culture which sees all young people having to pay incredible prices for everything from school books to food to houses.

---An increase in funding to youth initiatives such as Youthreach and the Youth Federation, which can give young people an alternative to our drink culture.

---Proper provision of facilities for young children such as childcare places and playgrounds, in order to ease the burden on young couples trying to make ends meet.

  • Women Quotas in Politics

Meath East Young Fine Gael has sharply criticised the recent decision by the Fianna Fail party to impose a quota on the number of women running as Dáil candidates in general elections. “This decision is an insult to women everywhere. It is patronising to no end in that it says that to us that you are where you are because of your gender.” Said Claire Lynch, Social organiser for Young Fine Gael.

Matthew Bruton, Chairman of the branch also added “When the Fianna Fail party feels it needs to do this, you just know they are getting worried. In Meath East Young Fine Gael, we are a perfect example of how we simply don’t need quotas to encourage women into politics. Over 50% of our members are women, with exactly 5 out of our committee of 10 being women too. It is my honest belief that this is as a result of Fine Gael’s commitment to progressive policies across the board, which show that unlike our opponents we are not a ‘club for the boys’ “

  • Some success in Suicide Awareness campaign

Young Fine Gael for Meath East have expressed their delight in the success of their campaign to have measures introduced to prevent suicide in Ireland. “The recent publication of a ten year strategy to try to reduce the suicide rate in Ireland is as a result of the active campaigning of Young Fine Gael supported by the senior party on the issue.” Said Matthew Bruton, its Chairman in Meath East.

“We are delighted to see that our hard work has paid off. This campaign, launched only a few months ago shows the how in touch with the real issues Fine Gael are in this country. In the last 7 years 3156 people died by suicide. Unfortunately since 1997, the Department of Health’s mental health budget has been reduced from 11% of overall spend to 6.9% in 2005. Given that more than two thirds of people who die by suicide tell someone of their intention in the last week of their lives it is imperative that resources are provided to help them.”

“Young FG also remain hopeful that the new office will spend more on direct capital investment for areas such as tracking those who self harm or attempt suicide, and providing them with support, than is spent on administration.”
