- RETROSPECTIVE: To take a look back at events that already have taken place which is what History of House aims to do.
It's been over two decades since the first identifiably house tracks were put onto vinyl, these decades which have changed the technology behind the electronic music revolution beyond recognition but left the basic structure of house intact. It's nineteen years since it was being said house couldn't last, that it was just hi-NRG, a fast blast that would wither as quickly as it had started. But then the music reinvented itself, and then again and again until it gradually dawned on people that house wasn't just another phase of club culture, it was club culture, the continuing future of dance music. The reason? It's simple. People like to dance to house music.

Robert Owens (DJ, Vocalist & Producer)
Robert Owens"I think the essence of what I do lies in the belief that the human heart can change. It's just me expressing different emotions, emotions that go from happy to sad because that's human existence. My work is about being aware of all the different facets and feelings in life. Much of it is driven by pain, but that's just an emotion. I can't stand there and be like a pop star, because I need to be real - and a real person gives from their soul and won't let anyone taint that." - Robert Owens
Though electronica has always been a producer's medium (and the few vocalists keeping their head above water are usually woman), Robert Owens became one of the figures most associated with the late-'80s golden era of Chicago house. Born in Ohio in 1961, he grew up singing in the church, but was working as a DJ when he met pioneering Chicago producer Larry Heard in 1985. The pair formed Fingers Inc. with Ron Wilson, and released a few excellent singles ("You're Mine," "It's Over") and the 1988 full-length Another Side. The group dissolved soon after, though, as Heard's burgeoning solo-production career (as Mr. Fingers) took over.
Owens had already released tracks on his own - "Bring Down the Walls" and "I'm Strong" for Alleviated, with production from Heard - and he signed a solo contract with 4th & Broadway. His 1990 LP Rhythms in Me was a solid effort, though it soon disappeared within the quickly disintegrating Chicago house scene. (One of his best-known features of the late '80s, the epic house moment "Tears," appeared under the names of Frankie Knuckles and producer Satoshi Tomiie.)
Owens had basically retired from music by the early '90s, preferring instead to run his own Christian bookstore. By 1996, he'd returned to dance music with Ordinary People, a two-part EP for Musical Directions. He teamed up with Tomiie and Cevin Fisher for a track from Tomiie's Full Lick LP in 1999, and one year later Owens appeared on the Photek smash "Mine to Give."

Who is Larry Heard
Addictive | Percussive | Heavenly | Uplifting
Those are some of the words spoken when describing the almost indescribable music of Larry Heard (AKA Mr. Fingers).
His musical influence can be heard in the songs of countless artists. For those who appreciate warm and passionate digital compositions, Larry's music is pure magic. Larry has been blessed with a unique gift that sends listeners into a blissful euphoric state.
One of his first releases in 1986 was a collaboration with singer Robert Owens, released under the group name "Fingers Inc.". The song "Mystery of Love" instantly became a classic hit, rising to #10 on the Billboard Dance charts.
1988 saw the release of the beautiful & groundbreaking double album entitled "Another Side", showcasing the unstoppable talents of Larry, Robert, and vocalist Ron Wilson.
Since then, he has released several dance/r&b/ambient albums that have kept fans satisfied while gaining waves of new listeners. Recent releases like "Loosefingers" are a stunning testament to his artistic integrity. Never one to sacrifice expression for economic awards, Larry continues to retain his unique and inviting sound.
For us who have heard his voice and music, we wouldn't have it any other way!

A bit about Marshall Jefferson, the 'Godfather' of house
There are a handful of men who have the title of "Godfather" of House. While many have legitimate claims to the title because of seniority and being there at the beginning, one stands out from the crowd as being the one that defined House music, and indeed dance music as we know it today. His name is Marshall Jefferson. In 1986 he played piano on a House record for the first time ever. The idea was so innovative that record companies told him that it wasn't even house music. That record was the platinum "House Music Anthem", and today you rarely hear a house record without piano.
Since then, Marshall's list of accomplishments in House music read like no one else. In 1987 he produced the first ever "Acid House" record "Acid Tracks" using the TB 303, and simultaneously launching the successful career of DJ Pierre. Also, he produced the first House record incorporating old tome soulful spiritual vocals, launching the successful careers of Ten City, Kim Mazelle and Ce Ce Rogers. All those early songs are blueprints for what we recognize today as Deep House, Garage and Techno music. The TB 303 is now the most sought after instrument for Techno artists and producers today.
It seems like almost every song Marshall produced turned into another form of music, which Marshall regrets, as he just wanted his songs to sound different from each other. Marshall was also the headline act in the first House music tour of Europe in 1987, and House music has remained since. The list of careers that Marshall has helped or launched reads like a who's who of dance music; Roy Davis Jr, Felix Da Housecat, Lil Louis, Frankie Knuckles, Steve "Silk" Hurley, and many others, not including thousands of producers/DJs that have been influenced by him.
The most impressive thing about Marshall, however is what separates him from all the others, his ability to consistently write the classic song. He is far and away the most covered songwriter in dance music today, with his back catalogue containing more than one hundred covers and sample licenses. This is because Marshall's forte has always been essentially groove-oriented.
In early spring of 1994 Marshall Jefferson came back from a four year sabbatical, returning to the UK he was surprised to see the lack of change in the dance music scene. He returned back to his first love, DJing. Six years on, he is one of the biggest DJs to come out of Chicago having played at every major club/event across Europe and playing resident to Europe's biggest dance festival Tribal Gathering/Big Love. Finally when we look at the House music spectrum in all its mutated forms from Deep House, Garage, Techno and Acid through the years, you can be sure he has contributed or influenced all of them!0 Comments 907 days

Renaissance is proud to announce the launch night of our latest world-wide residency, a bi-monthly event at Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh.
King Unique are a pair of studio junkies with a taste for bulldozer beats and sick synthesizers. It'd be easy to spend paragraphs listing this duo's accolades, but we think it'd be better to let their music do the talking. Their jab dropping decks 'n' fx DJ sets have headlined them at top clubs and festivals across the globe, their four-armed, twin-headed, single-minded mash-ups are truly a spectacle, not to be missed.
Doors: 11pm - 3am.
