  • Design and Material

To many musicians and fans, B.C. Rich will always be known for unconventional body styles. However, these designs were more than just aesthetic: they were intended to improve overall playability by making the instruments easy to play in different positions, and allowing easy access to the upper frets.

Another innovation was the use of exotic woods such as Hawaiian koa and mahogany. These unique woods gave guitars different overtones than those of more traditional construction.

"Acrylic Series" guitars. These guitars are made completely of acrylic and their bodies are transparent, making the electronics inside viewable. The original run of the acrylic models featured a standard bolt-on maple neck with wood headstock, but later models featured an acrylic headstock, matching the same color as the body and making the overall appearance of the guitar more attractive. Although acrylic is arguably denser than most woods and can potentially carry a "fatter" tone, the acrylic models are physically quite heavy and some players dislike the heavy instruments.

In 2006 B.C. Rich introduced the IT (Invisibolt Technology) series. In this series the neck is bolted inside the body to look like a neck-thru, but neck joint is still visible. This combines the elements of both bolt-on and neck-through designs for a brutal attack and lasting sustain.

  • BC Rich: good or Bad

    Jeff S by Jeff S
People that post that the build quality of the BC Rich is poor likely have a mass-produced model made in China. The US handmade BC Rich Custom Shop models made by Bernie Rico are just absolutely amazing. If you bought one at Guitar Center in the 1990s through present, you probably have a guitar that does not deserve to bear this name. The custom shop operation was a very small operation lead by Bernie Rico. They likely could not make ends meet without licensing the name to make these knock-offs with the low volume they had from the custom shop. Having met Bernie Rico Sr. and Jr. I know they would not have licensed the name if they had any other choice.
