The reason I am writing to you is to express my dismay with our local governments attitude to our national language.
Despite having 100,000s of daily speakers, the Irish language community is often ignored and many people in Ireland therefore do not realise how vibrant our native tongue actually is.
Gaeilgeoirí embrace the advantages and benefits of modern Ireland's cultural makeup yet believe that our own indigenous language has not yet achieved true equality with English and its culture of globalisation. People now more than ever appreciate the value of our own language with Ireland becoming more and more culturally diverse. The success of Gaelscoileanna is just one clear example.
It is because of the inequality practised towards our language that my cause is just. I have taken it upon myself to highlight the lack of Gaeilge used on local road signs by placing “As Gaeilge Anois” stickers on local government signs.
This campaign of peaceful action is designed to create maximum awareness and will only affront those who are threatened by cultural and linguistic equality.
Ninety five percent of placenames in Ireland come from Gaeilge. The English versions are meaningless. “Drogheda” means nothing. However “Droichead Átha” means the “Bridge of the Fort.”
Making all signage bilingual gives Irish the status it deserves. That means that the Gaeilge on our signs is correctly spelt and not the mish mash that exists at the minute e.g. “Droichid Átha” “Átha Cliath” etc.
Tourists who visit the area enjoy the cultural difference of Ireland – Irish signage gives them a clear, visible opportunity.
Monolingual signs insult those of us who work so hard to promote our language and culture. It is insulting to those of us who campaigned so hard to setup Tg4, to make Gaeilge an official language of the EU, and who campaigned tirelessly to have the Offical Languages Act passed.
It flies against our constitution and every political party’s stance. Why does it still happen? We wouldn’t accept a sign which reads as “Dublyn” so why should we accept one with mistakes in Gaeilge?
Gaeilge is for everybody. It is a language, a means of communication, a mindset, a history, a culture and a passion. It is a future. I would not force Gaeilge on anyone who does not wish to speak it – all I ask for is language rights and recognition.
