Dozens of football hooligans fought pitched battles in Cheltenham on Saturday.More than 50 thugs had running battles outside the Midland Hotel pub in Gloucester Road before the Robins match.



Onlookers watched in horror and traffic was brought to a standstill as the violence spilled into the middle of the road.

A group of Cheltenham Town and Bournemouth fans kicked and punched each other and hurled glasses and bottles the cheltenham fans then ran in all different directions leaving the injured behind.

Dozens of police officers went to the scene to break up the fighting and extra help was drafted in from Gloucester and the Cotswolds

The trouble started after a group of Bournemouth fans went into the pub opposite the train station.

Witnesses said the visitors attacked the pub before Cheltenham fans retaliated.

John Davis was in the bar when the fighting broke out.

He said: "A group of youths turned up and attacked the place. About 40 men who were inside ran out and a huge fight took place right in the road."

A 53-year-old man from Rowanfield, who didn't want to be named, said people inside the pub were frightened when the trouble started.

He said: "I saw about 10 police officers. Four came into the pub and were trying to sort it out. The fans were winding each other up for about 20 minutes before it suddenly erupted. The trouble spread up and down the road."

Dave Smithers was waiting for a train when he heard the commotion.

He said: "It was terrifying with people fighting and throwing bottles and glasses.

"Traffic came to a standstill as fighting erupted in the road. The owner of the pub had to shut up.

"It seemed to be football hooligans as there was shouting and chanting."

The Midland is popular with visiting fans but manager Russell Coglan said clashes between supporters was rare.

He said: "A group came in the pub for a drink and as they were leaving a Cheltenham fan said something to them. As they went down Gloucester Road, a fight broke out.

"We always get away fans in here but I haven't seen trouble like this for years.

"What surprises me is that there weren't any police at the station when the fans arrived. They're usually there from 10am but there was no one around. There was a big police presence after the incident though."

The police say they cleared the fight within 15 minutes.

At 2.15pm officers were called to the football stadium in Whaddon Road to prevent more trouble.

Five fans were thrown out of the ground. Two men were arrested for public order offences. One of them assaulted a police officer while being arrested. The police escorted fans away from the area after the match to prevent any more violence. Groups of officers also patrolled Cheltenham Spa train station in the evening along with the British Transport police.

Insp Ian Phillips said: "Officers went to the railway station as a result of information received of a large fight.

"Officers attended the scene and no offences were disclosed at that time. A crowd of football fans were moved on."

He said there were more than 20 police officers tackling the trouble and the police control room took several calls from members of the public.

The inspector says the game had been classed as a category A game which is the lowest assessment of potential problem.

Cherries fan Mick Cunningham said any violence would have been out of character for supporters.

Insp Phillips said: "The problems seem to have come from about 100 Bournemouth fans and 40 Cheltenham fans during the whole day.

The bournemouth fans also caused more trouble on their way home
