- Penumbra MSYPs aim to promote young people’s involvement in issues that affect mental health.
One in four of us will experience difficulties with our mental health at some point in our lives, so it is everyone’s business.
We believe that being heard and understood is something that improves our well-being, and young people have said this themselves.
We want to know what you think about mental health – the things you think affect it and what could be done to change these things.
The role of Penumbra MSYPs is not to provide any direct support or advice to individuals in relation to individual mental health issues
If you are experiencing any difficulties with your mental health, sources of support are available through the See Me Scotland links section: http://www.seemescotland.org.uk/link...
- Scottish Youth Parliament
- The Scottish Youth Parliament is a youth led organisation with around 150 elected young members, aged between14-25, from across Scotland. The members of the youth parliament aim to be a shared voice for all young people in Scotland, to have a say in the things that affect Scotland’s young people. You can find out more about it at: www.scottishyouthparliament.org.uk
- Penumbra
- Penumbra is a national organisation providing services to support mental health. There are youth services in Fife and in the Borders. There are also self-harm support services across the country which also work with young people. You can find out more at: www.penumbra.org.uk National voluntary organisations like Penumbra can have to members on the youth parliament, so Daniel Robertson and Kay McMahon fill those seats. They are supported by a support worker, Kirstie Farmer.
- Daniel Robertson, Penumbra MSYP
- Yo Folks, am Daniel and somewhere I make up the other half of the MSYP team! I have volunteered with Penumbra for over 5 years now and I have worked on various projects such as the website www.talking2ourselves.com, our wonderful BEBO other half "Positive Pete" and various other bit an bobs like organising youth events and making DVD's.. Locally I am founding member of the local youth council and I am constanstly engaging with young people to get their voices heard. In the Scottish Youth Parliament I am the Convener of the Health Committee which Kay also sits on, together we will be pushing the mental health agenda!
I am so passionate that young people use their voice so please let us know what we can do for you!! Cheers folks!! D
- Kay McMahon, Penumbra MSYP
- Hey, I’m Kay and I am one half of the Penumbra MSYPs! I also volunteer for various other mental health related work. Locally, I am a member of Fife Youth Forum, Fife Roars Not Whispers Peer Leader (http://www.bebo.com/rnw-fife ) and am heavily involved with the work of my fellow Fifer MSYPs.
Nationally, I sit on the Young Scot/NHS Health Panel, the Children and Young People’s Cross Party Group and Mental Health Cross Party Group. I am also involved with the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival which I am really excited about, as I am keen to increase opportunities for young people to be heard, and show that having your voice heard doesn’t always mean standing in front of a microphone, and voicing your opinion can happen in creative ways! Please get in touch if you want to get involved or find out more - We will look forward to hearing from you, and very much so
! - Kirstie Farmer, Penumbra MSYP Support Worker
- Children and young people have a right to express their views on matters which affect them, and that these views are taken into account when decisions are being made, under the United Nations Conventions on the Right of the Child (UNCRC), Article 12.
As well as this, young people from all over Scotland have highlighted the great importance they place on being listened to and understood and have said that this is something that helps them to feel good.
My job is to promote and support the participation of young people in issues affecting mental health. Part of this work is done through working with people who plan services for young people, but part of it is also supporting young people to participate. This includes supporting the work of Penumbras MSYPs, to represent the views of young people about mental health – what helps promote good mental health, what types of services are useful when experiencing mental health difficulties etc
So let Kay and Daniel know what you think. - What is "mental health"?
- We all have mental health, whether it is good or bad, and this can change depending on what is going on in our lives. Sometimes things go wrong with our physical health and this can affect how we can take part in life, the same is true for our mental health. Mental health is about how we think and feel and how this affects how much we can enjoy life and take part in things. When we are struggling with our mental health, it can sometimes make it as hard to take part as a broken leg would, and at times like these we might need a bit of extra support, whether that is talking to a friend, parent or teacher, or getting support through a service like Penumbra.
Lots of things affect our mental health – exams, money, friends, where we live, our job…but there are also things we can do to keep our selves mentally healthy - taking regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, taking time out for things we enjoy...you can find out more information about that through our 'other half' Positive Pete! - Just because we care!
