Rainbow Land....Follow Léa Brassy's footsteps in New Zealand
Léa Brassy, our Billabong free surfer, is in New Zealand for 4 months...Check out her travel diary:
Gisbrone city is this kind of charming place that could delay your plans. That’s what happened to me in the last few weeks. Settled in Wainui beach, by my friend’s house right on the beach, in front of the spot. Gisborne area is often off-shore and receives strong easterly swell in the winter. Quality breaks are all along the coast, from Makarori to Pipe. Both reefs and beachs breaks, there is a wave for every taste, but you’ll like it even more if you’re looking for hollow rides. One of them is a left handers breaking along the tinny little island at the north end of Gisborne’s bay. The paddle-and-walk-mission is worth it but It happens often that the quality beach break of Wainui stops me on the way! In between the surf, we share awesome time with Darnelle, Robson and David who welcome us, me and my French mate Florence with who I’ve been travelling for three weeks, in their easy going life. It’s all about enjoying the moment and relax. As David says, the best surfing area in NZ is Gizzy (Gisborne’s nickname) and the most consistent spot is the bank right in front of his house, so guess what, he’s a happy man!!!
Enjoying Gisborne area, you cannot miss East Woodhill Arboretum in this season. Red colours of autumn suit perfectly centenarian trees from all around the world. Gold leaves lied on the path were gently touching my bared feet and birds were singing an awesome joyful song. It was a perfect moment for my mind to jump into its dreams.
Mahia Peninsula, an hour south of Gisborne, has got a large choice of rocky and sandy breaks for all sorts of swell and wind. Even if I got unlucky with the conditions, I had a great time. I met a strange wild dolphin, called Moko, which comes in the bay everyday to swim and play with the people. I have been back to childhood for a few minutes while this huge animal was swimming around me, impressed and surprised it could be real.
Let’s go on a ten days road trip in the Coromandel, north of the Bay of Plenty. Renown for the epic left hander breaking on over two hundred meters at the entrance of Whangamata estuary. The peninsula has got hips of charming beaches which offers great surfing possibilities and as many holidays home. In this recession time, lots of them are for sale and it seems that all the town is on the real estate market! I especially remember Tairua and Opoutere beaches which offered amazing sessions and translucent green barrels with only a few mates to share with.
The swell brought us all the way through to Raglan. After a couple of unfortunate days, we got that kind of days that are really worth the journey! A six foot peeling wall at Manu Bay, and bigger on Indies. It’s a bit crowded but there are enough waves for everyone. As wonderful as short, massive westerlies welcomes us to the winter. Strong winds, showers and huge swell, let’s rest and shift on a city time in Hamilton. Cultural experience around student life with my Gizzys friends : graduation with hat and dress for Robson, parties, shopping down town, rugby games in the stadium and lots of laugh.
Winter time shows up. Warmer clothes and thicker wetsuit get necessary. Fortunately winter also offers wonderful scenes of lights and weather curiosity. Rainbows are everywhere, huge, often doubles, so colourful that we could think it’s a Photoshop creation. And sometimes, you feel drops running along your skin while the sun is shinning…

Featured Testimonial"You are a complete paradox as a person - innocent, yet experienced; fragile, yet strong on the inside; normal, yet unique; creative, yet organized; optimistic, yet realistic! Certainly a very interesting person - you possess several qualities that people often thought were mutually exclusive." |
