Janet <jcgodsown>

I started out my life as a WASP, which here in the USA is the acronym for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. Translated that means I am a 56 year old American woman of European (Swedish, Swiss, Irish and English) decent who is an Evangelical Bible-believing Christian saved by the grace of God. However, in my teens, the Cuban refugees leaving their homeland after Castro turned Communist arrived in droves to Chicago where I was born and lived my whole life. I met a Cuban young man and from that point on, as others were burning their bras, sitting-in, dropping out, smoking pot and in general bucking up against the establishment, I rebelled in my own, and I like to think safer, way. I integrated myself into the Cuban community and culture. I learned Spanish and I learned about the Cuban plight. I absorbed the hospitality and sense of family of their culture. I learned to be a dedicated parent who sacrificed for one's children and did not leave them with sitters (con't. blog #1)

I HAVE LIVED
My life...well...long...with joys and sorrows,
Learning from yesterday, reveling in today, seeing hope in
tomorrow.

The person who, from the mirror, looks back at me
Is not the child, woman, warrior, survivor who inside you'd see.
In her face are reflected the smiles and tears
Of unexpected blessings and vanquished fears.

I continue on till this journey be done,
Walking with God till the crown of life is won,
Seeing myself in each one I meet,
Loving, striving to make their lives more complete
because
I HAVE LIVED.

Life Is A Song (author unknown)
When you worry and hurry through your day
It is like an unopened gift....Thrown away.
Life is not a race. Take it slower.
Hear the music before the song is over.

The Invasion of the Gray
I think I'm going to color my hair
To pretend those pesky grays aren't there.
But then the roots will be the pain
As my hair begins to grow again.

Whose idea was this anyway
That golden brown should turn to gray?
And be they gray or tinted brown
Those new intruders just won't lie down.

They love to stand up straight and tall
As if to say, "You're not young at all."
I used to pull them one by one
But stopped because I'd soon have NONE!

"Age gracefully!" the saying goes.
That WAS my plan some years ago.
"Let's see what God has planned for me,"
I'd glibly say when forty-three.

But now that I am fifty-five,
A battle plan I would contrive.
The salon a youthful look will bestow,
UNTIL THE ROOTS BEGIN TO SHOW!
