You’ve heard of Amnesty International, right? We believe people should be treated like people. It's amazing how often they aren't.

Women are raped as a weapon of war. People are victimised by their own governments. Innocent citizens are locked up for their beliefs.

We believe in the power of ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things. There are over 2 million of us worldwide standing up for humanity and human rights.

This is our space where we share the things that matter to us. Take a look around...

  • Live webchat with Shell - today!

The time has come - At 1400 BST today, we are having a live webchat with Shell.

We need to ask tough questions about Shell’s human rights and environmental practices in the Niger Delta - and we want you to take the lead.

Get involved and register now http://bit.ly/tellshell

  • Make Shell come clean

How would you feel if an oil spill ruined your garden, polluted your water supply and meant it was much harder to make a living? This is the reality for many communities living in the Niger Delta.

Shell's damaging practices in this region have resulted in decades of pollution, killing the rivers and farmland that locals depend upon: Keeping them in poverty.

We want Shell to come clean about this, to stop the leaks, clean up the mess and publish data about their human rights impact in the region.

We need your help to make this a reality, so if you want to get involved and do your bit then head to http://protectthehuman.com/shell

  • Refugee Week 2009

Once a year, every year, Amnesty International and a whole host of other organisations get together to celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK. It's important that we overcome some of the misconceptions those already in Britain have about refugees and that we find ways to share each others experiences and culture.

There's a lot you an do during this week to get involved, from going to an event to taking action online. Here's a few to get you started...

    1. Do something really small to make a big difference. From reading a book about exile to playing a game of football with some refugees, there's something that everyone can do at http://www.refugeeweek.org.uk/simple...

    2. Attend an event such as a photo exhibition or a play about refugees. Full listings can be found here: http://www.refugeeweek.org.uk/Events/

    3. Tell us what the word ‘refuge’ means to you. Loads of people have already done this, you’ll find one of them in the video below, and a bunch of others on Wordia. http://wordia.com/refuge

We have a full list of stuff to do here: http://blog.protectthehuman.com/refu...

Let us know how it goes!

    Hi Mark,

Millions of Amnesty members around the world do care, and regularly make a real difference to the lives of individuals who are having their rights restricted. For instance, we recently protested and campaigned about the arrests of six Gambian journalists: They were released without charge.

In some cases, like these, we make a real difference very quickly, but others may take much longer - Amnesty is an organisation that never gives up and lets governments around the world know that they cannot abuse people's rights, otherwise it could happen anywhere, to anyone.

can i just say amnesty internation is an amazing organisation and we are all better off for it. they stand up for justice. i joined when i read the diary of anne frank. i was ten when i joined and read the magazines from cover to cover on every edition. i have been a member for nearly 2 years now and am proud of my membership.
i am doing a presentation in school (like Space Dust) and i was wondering apart from the points u gave her is there anything i cud use to make my class mates stop and think about joining without scaring them or using to long words as quite a few are dyslexic. but i wont be horrible becuz thts the sort of thing amnesty campaigns against-we are all one and deserve a chance no matter wat our race religion or gender. and could u give me some links or information on stuff happening to children around the world who is about my age? thanks x

    Hi Semi Bicycle Bex,

Suggest you check out both www.protectthehuman.com and http://amnesty.org.uk/events for upcoming actions, events and protests. It might also be worth finding your nearest local or student group and finding out what they're doing - you can find them here: http://amnesty.org.uk/listgroups.asp

Our protests and demos tend to be quite safe affairs, but I'd always check with the organisers first if you're worried about safety.
