Greetings from Ireland! Ok, technically Northern Ireland, which is the U.K., but I have a hard time with that- to me it's ALL Ireland. I'm here spending time with my fiancé Denver, but I'm originally from Detroit, and looking to move near the Berea area next year. I've been to Covington a few times when I was spending a couple of weeks in Cincy. I like the way the streets wind, and the style of houses you have. The hills must horrendous in the winter- I hope you don't get a lot of ice. Loose Change is a great documentary- hopefully it will go a long way toward educating people. I see you belong to the College Democrats- do you think there is any hope in rehabilitating the Democratic party? I mean, the currrent group is in bed with the powermongers as much as the Republicans. Have you considered the Greens? Have you come across a lot of paranormal events in N. Ky? What kind?

Hi Tiffany,I agree! I think it should all be one united Ireland. And I can see the UK conceding power if the people in northern Ireland were more like you :-). I'm looking to go to southern Ireland (University of Limerick) for a study abroad in a year and a half. Have you ever been down there? The Berea area is a great place. I'm actually going to be going down there during one of my breaks this year to see some of my high school friends who are going there. The school there is awesome, it has free tuition much like the universities back in Ireland. I didn't go there only because I held out for Miami U or Ohio - both schools look the same, with Berea looking a little more run down, not as shiny, but hey free tuition is free tuition. I'm from Covington and I love it there. Those winding streets and hills are great and I really miss 'em from up here in Indiana. (I'm going to Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute on the far side of the state). I'm going to send you another message hold on

Okay, ha this thing runs out of characters fast. Loose Change is indeed amazing and I just went and saw a pre-screening up in Chicago of the next big documentary, called "America: From Freedom to Facism". I think there is hope for the Democratic party, certainly more hope than there is for the Republican party, but I think the entire party system is counter-productive and goes against what our fouding fathers intended. I would run as an Independent, but at the moment the two major parties have made it very difficult for Independents to be elected (in some states its harder than in others) so I'm hoping to change the policy and platform of the Democrats to something closer to what would really help this country. A return to our roots. I've considered third-parties like the greens but a lot of people, sad as it is, vote according to party lines so if I truly want to make a difference I'm going to have to play the game for the time being until I can make the party better or make it---

easier for Independents to run and have their platforms listened to. There has been some good progress in that direction recently, with one techie out west creating a wiki for his future constituants to shape his policy to what they really want and need, but the mainstream just isn't ready. I'm hoping that by the time I'm older and deep in politics the time will be right. For now I'm taking up a trade (computers/technology) and I'll practice that until I get into office. Northern Kentucky and the greater Cincinnati area are home to numerous paranormal activities. It's one of the most active areas in terms of UFOs and abductions. It's also got a rich history going back centuries that supports much ghost activity. A lot of older homes, many with tragic or emotional histories that left an impression strong enough for a haunting. You might want to check out and read "Hell's Gate: Terror at Bobby Mackey's Music World" to see why many think it's home to _the_ most haunted places in America

My own investigation there turned up very little and the fact that it was written by a fiction author brings many things into question but the place really does have that history and could very well be haunted, despite my findings. Also down state you may want to check out the Waverly Hills Sanitorium in Louisville. At one point in time the Louisville Ghost Hunter Society (LGHS) had exclusive rights to investigate the place but a recent episode of Ghost Hunter's explored there and turned up a few interesting things. The episode managed to not mention the LGHS at all while at the same time calling LGHS members "TAPS Family" members or something like that. If I was the LGHS I would have been very mad about that and I certainly wouldn't invite TAPS back. If you're interested, you can check out some of my TV shows on the subject at www.anomalyresponse.org.

Hi Sean,I've only been to the Republic a few times, mainly Co. Donegal (in the west/north/west), and to Co. Meath. The only way to discern that you've left the U.K., is that the signs are in Gaelic as well as English, and they use kilometers, instead of miles. The people in Northern Ireland are reluctant to give up their status as part of the United Kingdom for mostly economic reasons I think. The U.K. provides more money for social programs and infrastructure than the Republic can't afford. Then they have developed a lot of tradition over the past 316 years since the Battle of the Boyne. This was my first 12th of July here, and the amount of parades put on by the Orange Order was suprising. Which brings me to your question about snagging a significant other. I'm afraid there was a miscommunication- I am from the States and Denver is from Ireland. But the answer is still the same: we met online, through a chat service on our cellphones, and started talking, then writing letters...

We started off in June, and we met in October. We've technically been together since July 26th 2005, so just a wee bit over a year.I've always wanted to go to Ireland, but I've got to tell you, while they are much more competent in a lot of areas (recycling, alternative energy, food labeling, and quality food at reasonable prices, national healthcare, social funding), there are somethings left to be desired- the price of housing is ridiculous- the American habit of speculating has made it across the Atlantic, and has driven the cost of property way up. The planning commission is very strict on what can and cannot be done to a piece of property. They regulate A LOT. Which in some ways is good- the States needs more regulation. But they take it to an extreme. If you needed rock, or broken up brick on your property, and someone had some and wanted to give it to you, you would have to apply for a permit to take it, as it's regarded as "waste" and it's illegal to dump "waste" anywhere
| Tiffany G ha detto... | 1233 giorni fa | ||
other than a approved landfill site. I understand that you need to keep jackasses from dumping garbage all over, but when you start needing a permit to take something from someone, that they don't need and you do, it's getting a bit much. Oh, and if you are the type that expects to pop over to the nearest store and pick up what you want, when you want it, you might as well resign yourself to that not happening here. The stores are only open late on Thurs. and Fri., until about 9.30 or so, except for Tesco's (grocery store with MINOR sidelines of clothes and electronics) which is open 24 hours Mon-Fri. On Sun. nothing opens til 1pm and is closed by 6pm. It's a beautiful country though, the rain keeps everything lush, and the people are nice. Cool buildings, and a lot of historical sites. I'm sure you'll have a great time in Limerick Let me know if they are under the same misconception that all Americans are rich lol

lol they probably do! When you say housing is high, is it high compared to the states or to other European counties? Do you have an example of how much a typical home goes for? Sorry, I got confused, I reread your original post and you made it clear you were over there visiting him :-). Still, that's interesting though, a chat service on your phone? To meet a guy in Ireland? How much did that cost you!? lol. How's cell reception over there? Is the entire country blanketed (which would be easy) or are there still areas without coverage?

| not all of the people in "northern" ireland want to remain as a part of the united kingdom, tiffany! typical ignorant american who speaks about ireland as if they live here. there are about 1,200,000 people in the occupied six counties of ireland and about 300,000 of those people want a united ireland, those people are called irish nationalists. there are also about 300,000 people who are willing to join ireland's legitimate army (the irish republican army) and fight and maybe even die for a democratic, federal, socialist irish republic, like the one that was declared at the first dail in 1916 by the provisional government and the legitimate government of ireland, those people are called irish republicans. | |||

use americans who want sooo sooo bad 2 b irish are complete idiots! no joke! i'm even agreeing with the catholic dude above me! northern ireland and the republic have nothin 2 do with use!! stick 2 yer own country! use have enough minority problems of your own without having 2 look over us and think use know it all!! how long have u lived in northern ireland or the republic of ireland for sean?? and just as theres many nationalists willing to die for there beliefs thers many more loyalists willing to do the same for there beliefs in northern ireland so jst keep yer nose out!
| Sean Feeney ha detto... | 966 giorni fa | ||
Not sure why you posted that here lol...but here's my two cents anyways:There are people in Northern Ireland who consider themselves Irish (Republic), and there are people in the Republic of Ireland who consider themselves British (Northern Ireland / England / whichever). If you don't believe me, go read through some Irish Bebo pages. If you follow UK politics, you'll know that some more power was was recently devolved from London to Belfast. This can only lead to more devolution in the future as people get a taste of self-governance and demand more power, and as London focuses more and more on problems at home. Eventually this may lead to 1) an independent Northern Irish state or 2) the reintegration of the Republic and the North. These are simply possibilities, and there are supporters and opponents on both sides.

As far as Americans wanting to be Irish, to each his own. I personally have a strong Irish heritage, my grandfather immigrating from County Sligo less than a century ago, and it's simply a typical American prerogative to want to seek out and visit the land of his forefathers, whether that's Germany or Japan or Ireland. We're all immigrants here, and in most cases we've kept our love for our mother countries. This can be seen in the numerous parades and festivals here each year.

Obviously the people that primarily use this service are all the miserable, unhappy, xenophobics, that have nothing better to do than be hateful. I'm really glad that in the time that Ive spent over there that I haven't met any of these people. It must be the wet-behind-the ear set's issue, because all the ADULTS I've met have been wonderful people. You all need to fucking lose the attitude because no one has done shit to you. Get the chip off your shoulder b4 someone knocks it off. BTW at least we don't have roving bands of males that go around breaking into pensioner's homes and robbing them.

lol this white board has most definitely gotten out of hand. Yes, I'm American. Yes, my lineage is Irish AND my lineage is British. *gasp* let's all get out of hand because I support the Republic. Ha ha! Come on, you have got to have something better to do.My grandfather left the country because he was tired of working for free on the farm. Now that the landscape has changed, Information Technology has become king, I might just come back someday. But seriously, when you're interested in talking about something of substance, you get back to me. Until then I'd rather this not be the forum for arguments over "trash can" vs. "trash bin"...both are completely valid when you can respect cultures other than your own.

Em in not a xenophobic, Ive actually recentyl been to New York, and because of my accent people there naturally enough talk about IReland, and that they are from Ireland as there 2nds cousins ex girlfrined had a dog that was from Ireland.Yes i may be exagerating for comic effect, but in truth that wasnt far from the case. And we may have to odd dodgy cunt that rapes a pensioner, well at least beats giving a gun to the odd maniac u lot have over there...
| Sean Feeney ha detto... | 964 giorni fa | ||
lol. Okay, "bin". That word has many meanings over here, so we don't use it because you typically put stuff you want organized into a "bin" and not stuff you want to trash. Culture thing.As far as guns, the peeps here in Germany agree that it's a bit odd. But hey, have to be able to rise up against an unjust government somehow, and us Americans are still very untrusting of "officials", even if they're our neighbors. Look at Bush for example.

lol I'm a college student and I minor in Political Science. My professor is the Executive Director of the British Politics Group, a related group of the American Political Science Association. We're force fed such things.But you have a point: Why am I more interested in your politics than you are? Political apathy is widespread in America, even more so than in your country. Very few of my peers have any clue about American politics much less yours. It just so happens, I'm one of the few who do. It's like asking why you're interested in soccer! I'm not, but you are, that's just how our interests lie.
