  • Slashers Seniors into County Final

Our Senior team play in the Longford County Senior Championship final next Sunday week, 28 September. We have ordered hoodies, replica jerseys both for adults and kids, car flags and other flags to add some colour to the occasion. All this merchandise will go on sale at the club house on Wed 24th Sept between 7 and 9pm. All merchandise will be sold at cost price. Too often we are completed overshadowed by the opposition support. We may not be able to do anything on the field but we can attend in numbers and make our presence felt. So all our members and supporters are asked to wear the colours to make themselves seen and heard on the day.

    Slashers 1 -12 Abbeylara 1 - 6

We booked our place in our second county final in three years with a great victory over Abbeylara on Saturday last. This was a closer game that the final score line may suggest. We were one point down at half time half time, 1-3 to 1-4. Adrian Murphy scored a great penalty while the Abbeylara goal came from a weak clearance by goalkeeper, Gordon Hourican, which dropped perfectly for Abbeylara full forward to finish to the net. Abbeylara scored the first point of the second half but did not score again until the 3rd last minute of the game. In this period Slashers scored 8 points without reply. That is not to say that Abbeylara did not have chances and they missed at least three scoreable frees. On the other hand Mark Smith, the Man of the match, could do no wrong and punished Abbeylara again and again from frees and play. Mark ended up with a total of 0-9 points. His brother, Colm, was introduced in the second half and he made his presence felt by adding two points. The other Slashers score came from a fisted effort by Trevor Glendenning.

Defensively we played well and to keep a team with the attacking qualities of Abbeylara to a score of 1-6 bears testament to that. David Sheridan was outstanding at midfield especially in the first half and had his best outing of the year so far. Ian Shannon came into the game and had an excellent second half. Up front we struggled a bit with the majority of scores coming from the Smith brothers. Barry Gilleran also had a good hour.

We have lots to work on between now and the county final. Irrespective of who we are playing we must up our performance if we wish to capture the title for the first time in 14 years. Paul Kelly and Niall Mulligan are back from the US and with a couple of weeks training should add significantly to the panel.

    Team: G. Hourican, C. Barnes, G. Ghee, D. Mannion, D. Brady, M. Brady, P. Brady, I. Shannon, D. Sheridan, M. Smith, B. Gilleran, A. Murphy, T. Glendenning, P. Dobson, S. Phillips. Subs: C. Smith, D. Glennon, R. Barnes

  • Niall Mellon Township Trust Fundraiser

Club member, Gerry Meenaghan, is travelling to South Africa next March to participate in this important venture. This is a charity that is making a real difference on the ground where it counts. To raise funds Gerry is holding a race night in the Longford Greyhound Stadium on Friday night 12th Sept. The first race is starting at 8pm. All our members and friends are asked to support Gerry. Tickets for the night can be bought at €10, dogs can be sponsored for €25 and a race can be sponsored for €100. All other donations would be gratefully accepted.
