- Hello, I’m Tom. I am a Marine Biologist at the Zoological Society of London. My job involves researching how penguins are adapting to the challenges of climate change, and coping with its impact. The job involves various things - fieldwork, which requires collecting data during short, intense stints working in areas such as Antarctica, processing the samples and finally analysing the information.
I was always fascinated by science subjects at school but never thought it would take me to such amazing places. I’ve worked in the Amazon rainforest, the Mexican rainforest and in Antarctica where we set up camp just 500m away from the penguin colonies. You may not think it, but penguins are loud!
Studying science has allowed me to travel to some of the most interesting parts of the world and get involved in some exciting projects such as co-authoring a book. Plus not many people get to work with penguins for a living! - Favourite Music

FAQs
What subjects did you study at school?
A Level: Chemistry, biology and English literature
GCSEs: 12 GCSEs including triple science, maths, history, geography, design and technology and French
What qualifications do you need for your job?
It’s really the skills learnt through your academic path from GCSEs through to university that help.
How much can I earn?
The job may not be paid well compared to many other industries, but I am happy with the living I makes from it. There are many great perks of the job, such as travelling to interesting places that most people in almost every other job will never experience.
What other careers can Maths and Science lead to?
I explored becoming a marine biologist while doing A-levels, but science and maths can lead to most other careers.
What advice can you give someone who wants to do your job?
It is a tough field to get into, but I never thought I would be working such extreme and varied conditions. Keep working towards your goal and talk to people involved in the area you want to go into. Your teachers can also help explain what is needed to reach your goal. Don’t give up at the first obstacle!4 Kommentare 372 Tage

Im doing my GCSEs at the moment and ive taken History, Ethics and Philosophy, French and 3D art and sculpture, and three sciences. I took these to give me a wide a range of skills as possible.
Im predicted good grades for my english (A*), Science (B) and maths (B).
The problem is that i have no idea what to do next! Do i go to uni? I really dont want to, could i do college instead? but if i have to what do i take?
