My Lifestory

close About Me

Me, Myself, and I
Hi, I’m Toby and I’m the Producer of Operations at BBC Radio 1. My main job is to make sure Radio 1 remains on air. Sometimes this will mean setting up the studios before a show and teaching people how to use the equipment correctly. Other days it involves building studios at outdoor shows, such as Radio 1’s One Big Weekend, Glastonbury or working with exciting bands such as the Foo Fighters. No day is ever the same!

I got involved in music and bands from an early age and always knew I wanted to do something in this field. But I liked science and maths at school too as I like to work things out analytically and find the solutions to problems. A career in radio combines all of these interests and really is perfect if you enjoy mixing them all up!

  • FAQs

What subjects did you study at school?
A Level: Physics, Design and Technology, English language and Literature, AS Maths
GCSEs: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Design and Technology, Art, English language, English literature, French

What qualifications do you need for your job?
Degree level or equivalent experience in a related field.

    How much can I earn?
Salaries depend upon public or commercial sector and the size of the broadcast network or networks you are responsible for. At a guess I would say between £30k to £60k.

What other careers can Maths and Science lead to?
They could lead to loads of careers - Broadcast Engineer (TV or Radio), Project Engineer (TV or Radio), Research & Development Engineer, Studio Manager (BBC speak for Sound Engineer), Outside Broadcast Sound Supervisor, Online Content Producer, Operations Assistant or even Presenter, as there are so many technology-based programs around now.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to do your job?
Other than a passion for music and radio, Maths and science give you a good base understanding for this type of work. Do not think that studying science and maths at A Level will pigeonhole you later on in life. They give you a great grounding and a better understanding of how the world works in many different areas.

    Hi Fraz,

Have you read through my blog? If you like technology, science and maths, there are many career options in Radio that you can get into.

Have a chat with your Science teacher to see what they suggest and do write back for more information.

    Hey Toby :)

I really fancy doing something in radio but I think that I want to be in more of a presentational role, Scott Mills is my idol and I fancy doing something like that. I've heard about greg James and annie mac and how they got to where they are. I've even spoken to Aled about it on unofficialmills. I know that people say to go through the hospital/student radio bit am I'm going to do so, but do you have any other advice?

Radio 1 is my goal as I really love the station and music and I'd love to be a part of it. I'm in lower sixth and studying French, german, English Lit and Economics.

    Thanks in advance Toby,

    Fraser

P.S. If you could get me some work experience, it'd be much appreciated ;)

You say that radio engirneering combines elements of maths and scinene, but what sciences are yo talking about? Physics or Chem ? And what A-levels would be highly regonised in this feild? And any university degrees i should be looking at? Also would an A-level in music be essential or is a g.c.s.e. enough? What makes employers in the music industry (radio production) look out for in applicants? THANKYOU for even reading this, but please do answer them, that would be awsome, thanks.

Hi, I'm glad I found this, cus I definately want to take science and maths further, but never found anything that interests me...but this does :]

I was wondering if the A levels mentioned int he FAQ were essential, because I was planning on taking Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Spanish and probably ICT for my AS levels next year...just wondering if that rules out this career choice.

    Thanks, :)
