World Vision is an international Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation, currently helping more that 100 million people in nearly 100 countries. We are dedicated to working with children, families and communities overseas to overcome poverty and injustice. We work in areas where there have been disasters to provide immediate help. We also work in lots of countries, like India, where poverty is a long-term problem. We work alongside communities there to achieve lasting solutions in areas such as healthcare, education and clean water. In all that we do, we place a special emphasis on ensuring the needs and rights of children are met, as they are often the hardest hit by conflict, disaster and poverty.

  • Did you know?? Jaipur Facts

Jaipur is the capital city of the state of Rajasthan in North-West India. It was established in 1727 by the Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the King of Amber. Singh created a city that is considered by many to be one of the best planned cities in India and is the only city in the world which is divided into nine rectangular sectors each designed to symbolise one of the nine divisions of the Hindu universe.

Jaipur was built to be the home of the Rajasthan royal family and the city today is still steeped in the rich history of royalty. Now the capital of the state, Jaipur is considered a jewel in the golden sands of barren deserts, surrounded on all sides by rugged hills, which are crowned with forts and enclosed by embattled walls. Impressive architecture can be seen in the numerous monuments, palaces and structures abundant throughout the city.

Jaipur is also known as India’s Pink City this is because it was painted red (a lucky colour in Hindu culture) to welcome England’s Prince Alfred during his visit to India in 1853.

The magnificent City Palace, the official residence of the royal family, is in the centre of the city and is enclosed by high walls and set amidst fine gardens and courtyards. Since Jai Singh built it in 1728 it has been the principal residence for the Maharajas (kings) of Jaipur and the royal family still live in a portion of this palace today.

Hawa Mahal (The Palace of the Winds) adjoins the outside of the City Palace
complex and overlooks one of the city’s main streets. The building was built in 1799 to provide a viewing point for the ladies of the royal court to observe the activity in the bazaars below without being seen themselves. This five-storey building was built in the shape of a crown and contains over five hundred screened windows and balconies concealing the ladies of the court whilst offering some of the best vantage points of the city.

Today Jaipur has a population of more than 5 million residents and is a centre for both the modern and traditional industries. The thriving commercial city is complemented by a reservoir of Indian customs, traditions, civilization and legacy.
