  • Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr

    At 13, Deanna falls into a relationship with 17 year old Tommy. This involves smoking dope and having sex in his car - until the day Deanna's father hauls them both out of the car. From then on, Deanna is known as a slut in her small town high school. This story takes place over the summer holiday three years later, as Deanna works through her feelings about what happened, and her future.

    A very realistic book - there's not a lot of action but a lot of thinking. Deanna's family is shambolic, and she herself often makes poor decisions. But each character is realistic, and the ending is hopeful but not rose-tinted. A book that would suit teens who like thought-provoking fiction.

  • The Cardturner by Louis Sachar.

    Another brilliant book from Sacher. He has made Bridge fashionable again, using humour and a unique writing style that grabs your attention from the first page. Would appeal to all teens.

    Under strict instructions from his mother, Alton has to help out ‘his favourite uncle’ who is blind, has a passion with the card game bridge and is very rich. Alton has been given the job of being his uncle’s cardtuner. Feeling very much like the poor relation and not the least bit interested in cards Alton heads up to his uncle’s mansion.

    But things do not always turn out the way you think they will … enter a girl who hears voices, a new found friendship with his sister and Alton’s life takes a turn for the best.

    The first book in a new cosy mystery series by the author who is most famously known for her Granny Apple Mysteries featuring the rather plump Odelia Grey. In Murder in Vein, it takes us to the heart of Hollywood LA to a small restaurant where Madison Rose worked "The Aunt Em's Diner" (the name reminds me of the lady Em from the Wizard of Oz Movies). When Madison is accidentally kidnapped and then the killer killed by Vampires. Madison is soon involved with and more than your average girl with the California State of Vampires Government, we watch as older Vampires Dodie and Doug take Madison under their wings and soon, all the Vampires welcome Madison into their tight-knit group- a real family, something that Madison has lacked since she was a little girl. However, when the killer's accomplice finds Madison is her happiness short-lived or will her new found family come to her rescue?
    Find out in this wonderful light-hearted mystery , this author is one I will have to add to my To-read list as if her other books are anything like this one, I am sure to enjoy.
