Clash of the Camans
Clash of the Camans
22 June 2009
Saturday saw TCH and the Smith sisters (shortly to appear at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut) take the field in the Marine Harvest "Clash of the Camans" challenge match in Fort William. TCH and Glengarry were invited to take part as last year's cup and national league winners, respectively.
The Harps went into the match missing six of their eight named first team players but were bolstered by guest players Katy and Jenni Smith (on a free loan from Forth Camanachd) and the return to the team of long lost player Christine McCrimmon. Glengarry also had their troubles to bear in fielding a team for this summer Saturday fixture.
The Harps started strongly. The midfield took control and the Harps had chance after chance in the first 15 minutes. Some good saves from the Glengarry goalie Elaine Cameron denied the Harps from taking an early lead. However Glengarry forward Sarah Corrigal replied with a powerful run, scoring in what proved to be Glengarry's only real attack of the first half. The Harps did their best to equalise and wave after wave of attack was finally rewarded by a Fiona Mathie goal just before half time.
The Harps started the second half in the same way, buoyed by the equaliser, but it did not seem to be their day. Attack after attack was to prove fruitless. Glengarry enjoyed a period of pressure in the last quarter and some excellent defending by Hilda, Sarah, Jenni and Shiv soaked up the pressure. However a few minutes before full time Corgi once again proved too strong, leaving the final score 2-1 to Glengarry.
The final score was a disappointment but the lassies that made the trip can be proud of their efforts, especially as many were playing out of position or in the 1st team for first time this season. I think Roisin in especial is hoping that this will be her first and last goalie appearance of the season/rest of her life0 Comments 151 weeks

Celtic festival Glasgow
Tir Conaill Harps GAC is delighted to announce the dates for the fourth annual women's Celtic sports festival, which will be held over the weekend of 2nd to 4th October 2009. The festival theme is to raise the profile of women's gaelic sports both within the Harps club and also to the wider Glasgow community. The festival will include it's usual programme of camogie and ladies football tournaments, coaching workshops and not forgetting the very popular Festival Hooley, which will be held in the Eurohostel's Osmosis bar this year.
In 2008 ten clubs from Ireland, England and Scotland, fielding 8 camogie teams and 7 ladies football teams, took part. We hope to build on that success with even more teams in 2009. Further details are available from Grace McBride (camogiestars@hotmail.com). Regular updates will also appear on web site www.tirconaill.org

The Hurlers prayer Give me o'Lord a hurlers skill With strenght of arm and speed of limb Unerring eye for the flying ball And courage to match them whatever befall May my aim be steady - my stroke be true My actions manly - my misses few And no matter what way the game may go May I part in friendship with every foe When the final whistle for me is blown And I stand at last at Gods Judgement Throne May the great Referee when he calls my name Say ... You hurled like a man You played the game Amen
