"Recording a verdict of suicide, Mr Sykes said: "The Emo overtones concerning death and associating it with glamour I find very disturbing."

The Emo phenomenon began in the U.S. in the 1980s. It is a largely teenage trend and is characterised by depression, self-injury and suicide.

Followers wear tight jeans with studded belts and wristbands. Their hair is dyed black and worn in long fringes to obscure their faces.

Emo - from the word emotional - is a reference to the angst-filled lyrics and melancholy themes of the rock music central to the culture.

One of the foremost of these "suicide cult" bands is My Chemical Romance, from New Jersey.

Their first single, Welcome to the Black Parade, from the album The Black Parade, was released in 2006 and became a huge hit, going to number one in Britain.

The concept album follows the story of a character called The Patient, who dies of cancer.

The Black Parade is a nickname for the place where Emo fans believe they will go when they die.

Emo, which stands for "emotional, is a youth movement based around dark music, dark clothing and a dark view of the world.

It was pioneered in America and emo followers adhere to a host of cult-like conventions to demonstrate dedication to this new wave of pop music and lifestyle.

The emo brand of music sounds much like indie or rock, but it takes its unique name from the emotional lyrics and melancholy themes.

One of the forerunners of this genre is the band My Chemical Romance from New Jersey, America.

While most fans simply enjoy the music and dress, others take their fascination to a sinister level.

They indulge in self-harming and become obsessed with death and suicide."

I cannot believe the lengths of today's society go to to shun "emo" as a group of silly 13 year olds who slit their wrists because it's "cool". I'm sorry about Hannah Bond's killing herself, but My Chemical Romance really can't be blamed for this. They were quoted on their official website saying:

"My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it one of our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans. The message and theme of our album "The Black Parade" is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states: "I am not afraid to keep on living" - a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings. If you or anyone that you know have feelings of depression or suicide, we urge you to find your way and your voice to deal with these feelings positively."

If these people who back the Daily Mail and The Sun stopped to listen to the lyrics of The Black Parade and 3 Cheers, they would eventually comprehend how MCR are a group of 5 people who want to help save lives.

And I think the most unfair part of all of this is how emos are stereotyped into a group of whiny, self-obsessed teenagers. We can all admit to feeling depressed every now and again, regardless of which stereotype we fit into, but when you see that the unhappy one is in skinny jeans with a side fringe, it becomes your duty to judge them and laugh. Think about it.

    The Entertainer. by The Entertainer.
when you think about it, arn't mcr doing the same thing as the mothers meeting or whatever it's called. they exist to help kids who need help, to tell people they arnt alone. they are against violence, racism, sexism and ignorance and isnt that what the Mothers want?? MCR just use a much better, bigger and awesome-er way of doing it than banning a genre of music. (yeah, like that was gunna work)

that was just about the most hypocritical speech ever,

you say you agree that music shouldn't be controlled yet you're basically saying "stop listening to this shit"?

acctually i said most of the bands mentioned here a pretty crap
madina lake was just an add on that i felt should be mentioned cos they are suckish like the bands mentioned
MCR have never changed bloody lifes despite what people will say... no matter how influental a band is or a genre of music it can never change a life unless the person themself is willing to change themsleves or save themselves
i agree with you that no one shud control what bands play or what music a person listens to but this is basically a site dedicated to MCR and their ilk whereas there are thousands of bands better and more talented that are dicriminated againest for less
maybe parents arent worried about depression or their kid being "emo" but more that their child is embarassing them by listening to such drivel?

you fuckers have got a point.
all the people that dissagree with this sort of music, what's the point?
i mean, it's a TYPE of music, it will never be stopped.
yeayea, so what, they say fuck a few times in their songs, and swear a bit, so what?
kids are going to hear that sort of shit sooner in their lives, why should it be any diffrent?
it's just a bit naive tbh,
the mothers should grow up, and see that nothing will change either way.

I think it's dumb to put the blame on bands like mcr for teen violence and sucide when RAP music and RnB talk more about guns and knifes than any rock band yet nobody starts on them for this and there are band that do tell people to commit sucide and mcr is not one of them. What is the point of trying to get rid of a band that sends out good messages to the people who listen to it, who has saved kids lives and who does countless thing to raise money for charity. Some of there concerts the money just goes to charity when they ignore the music that does encourge violence and sex and sucide. How many time do you hear about emos and people who listen to rock music in knife and gun crimes huh? it's usually them gangsta wannbes who listen to there RAP and RnB yet nobody fucking mentions this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and how oftne is sex mentioned in mcr albums huh? Never but look at one RAP and RnB song and you will find countless mentions of it actually even worse look at there videos.
