close About Me

Me, Myself, and I
Hello! I’m Simon and I’m a spacecraft systems engineer. Right now I’m working on a project for the Canadian Department of Defence to launch a satellite into orbit. My job involves leading the design of satellite and meeting with all the engineers who are working on the project. It is a very exciting hands on job and we work very closely as a team.

  • FAQs

What subjects did you study at school?
GCSEs – Maths, Science x 2, IT, Eng x 2, Spanish, History, PE, RE
A Levels – Maths, Physics, Eng Lit

What qualifications do you need for your job?
For this job you generally need a degree in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering. A masters degree or PhD in a relevant field also stands out, but not totally necessary. I did my Masters in Astronautics and Space Engineering.

    How much can I earn?
Salaries start from about £22,000 depending on qualification and experience and you’d expect to see a substantial increase after one year. However, for me it’s about working the job of my dreams!

What other careers can science and maths lead to?
With a maths and science degree the possibilities are astronomical ; - )
From launching satellites to launching a new lipstick!

What advice can you give to someone who wants to do your job?
Try to keep your studies as broad as possible. Whatever you choose to do make sure you do it to the best of your ability. If I was to recommend a specific A Level, I would definitely say physics. The subject is all encompassing and offers a great platform for further study.

    Hey
I'm 15 and I'm taking my GCSE's this year...and i was wondering how you get involved in something like spacecraft engineering?
Because I love space and the universe...and science in general really...and i also love medalling and tinkering with car parts and engines and stuff...so I sort of put two and two together and taa daa...thought that space craft building would be ideal...What do you think?

    Hey there.

You have a very interesting job.

I was thinking about being an astronaut, well, not thinking i guess it is my dream.

I am 14 years of age and currently serving in the british Air Training Corps as a cadet - hoping to join the RAF as a fighter pilot.
I want to be an astronaut for N.A.S.A but thought to be a fighter pilot first to begin with.
Do you have any suggestions and think im heading in the right direction?

I'll share a bit of my schoolwork. Im getting better at maths, just achieving above average, I love physics although it's not part of the curriculam at my age.
At science i seem to be working extremeley high,
Average being 5c but my full on potention level could be a 7c.
Plus i seem to have experience of flying in light aircraft and controlling them.

    Thanks for reading this,

    tap back,

    Akash.
