1.Use job boards effectively. The objective of a jobs website like RecruitIreland.com is to help to make it as easy as possible for you to find a job so try to make use of the many services on offer. Register for job alerts so that you’ll be informed by email when a job you’re interested in becomes available. Set up an RSS feed for your own job search criteria, this will then do the search for you and save you completing the same searches over and over again. You can also upload your CV and allow it to be viewed by prospective employers, this way they’ll contact you when they have a job they’d like to talk to you about.

2.Choose your applications carefully. This confidence will set you apart from much of the competition and ultimately win you the role.

3.The CV is not an excuse to list everything you have ever done under a set of predetermined headings. The purpose of a CV is to act as an initial communication (marketing material) and say to the potential employer “I can solve your problem” or “I’m the best person for the job”. Your CV must make an impact and sell you effectively to give you the opportunity to get the interview. With this in mind the organisation, the position and the job description should determine the content of your CV. You should take the time to tailor your CV to the organisation and the position and above all highlight the skills you have that match the needs of the organisation.

4.Be careful what you say on your social networking sites, increasingly employers are using the internet to research prospective candidates before inviting them for interview!!

5.Good Preparation is imperative. The return on your time invested into researching the organisation and the job can be the best paid work of your life. Find out all you can about the job and the organisation, use the internet to research the company and if you can, talk to people who know the job and organisation. 6.Read the job description thoroughly and use this to anticipate the core competencies the recruiter is looking. You can then use this information to prepare a list of the questions you may be asked.
Do your research to find answers to the questions you may be asked, good answers should last between 30 seconds and two minutes, so answers should be only three bullet points or less. Next, practice, beg, bribe or threaten your nearest and dearest to act as interviewer and formally ask you the questions you have prepared and provide constructive feedback. Prepare answers that use real examples of how you demonstrate this competency in your current role.
