Charity 'makes you feel better'
Spending money on others might represent a more effective route to happiness than spending money on oneself

Why Do Some People Criticize All the Time and Put Others Down?
Why do they behave like this and should you fight back?
My experience of people that are always criticizing others is that they are deeply unhappy, have a low self esteem and perhaps even depressed. When people are depressed, sad or insecure often the world becomes very dark and they do see the enemy everywhere. Some people are very jealous of other people's success and deeply resent it. They then start to 'act' out.
It can also be a form of projection. They project onto others what they feel about themselves. When they call you a loser, really this is a direct reflection of how they feel about themselves. It is likely too that they consider this how you think about them so they get the insult out there first. The more unkind they are to you, the more distance you create between you, and this results in them trying harder to get your attention.
They feel rejected and try with inappropriate means to re-establish a connection. Look at how 'naughty children' behave when trying to get attention. The attention grabbing efforts are always negative and not positive. Is it possible this person has yet to learn these methods are not effective!
If you are an attractive, bubbly, successful, wealthy person with a nice happy home, great relationship, lovely children, nice car or any number of other things that this person does not have then this is in itself is reason for them to resent you if they are unhappy about what they lack in their own life.

Poverty
Poverty is the condition of lacking basic human needs such as nutrition, clean water, health care, clothing, and shelter because of the inability to afford them.
This is also referred to as absolute poverty or destitution. Relative poverty is the condition of having fewer resources or less income than others within a society or country, or compared to worldwide averages
Causes of poverty mainly concern reasons behind the low wealth and productivity of the poor or, conversely, the shortage and inflation of the goods they consume.
One third of deaths - some 18 million people a year or 50,000 per day - are due to poverty-related causes: in total 270 million people, most of them women and children, have died as a result of poverty since 1990.
Those living in poverty suffer disproportionately from hunger or even starvation and disease. Those living in poverty suffer lower life expectancy. According to the World Health Organization, hunger and malnutrition are the single gravest threats to the world's public health and malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child mortality, present in half of all cases.
Every year nearly 11 million children living in poverty die before their fifth birthday. 1.02 billion people go to bed hungry every night.[40] Poverty increases the risk of homelessness. There are over 100 million street children worldwide. Increased risk of drug abuse may also be associated with poverty. According to the Global Hunger Index, South Asia has the highest child malnutrition rate of world's regions.
Nearly half of all Indian children are undernourished, one of the highest rates in the world and nearly double the rate of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Defence ministers in the Nato alliance meet in Edinburgh on Saturday 14 November to discuss the continued occupation of Afghanistan, which is waged in the name of NATO. It will get a warm welcome from Stop the War Coalition Scotland, which has organised a No to NATO demonstration calling for troops out of Afghanistan and the scrapping of Trident nuclear missiles.
With the farce of the Afghan fraudulent elections making Hamid Karzai even less legitimate as president than he was before, the continually rising number of British soldiers getting killed and Barack Obama likely to announce a second troop surge, despite knowing -- as he surely does -- that the war is unwinnable, the demonstration is very timely.
Stop the War Scotland reports a real swell of support in Edinburgh for the protest, with families of serving soldiers saying they’ll be joining the march.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.
"First they came ..." is a popular poem attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group.
Redmond 0'Neill
Redmond O'Neill, who died last week at the age of 54, was an anti imperialist and socialist who campaigned consistently against war and racism.
As a senior adviser to the former London mayor, Ken Livingstone, he helped to facilitate events and demonstrations for the anti war movement.
He brought Jesse Jackson over to speak on the major demo against the Iraq war on February 15 2003, he helped organise a series of Xmas parties for peace at City Hall, and he ensured that Trafalgar Square was available whenever possible to hold the rallies over Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan that have been at the heart of the movement. Redmond was instrumental in campaigning against Islamophobia and in defence of the Muslim community.
He will be sadly missed by the movement. We send our deepest sympathy and condolences to his partner, Kate Hudson, to his family, to his friends and comrades.
His funeral will be on Friday 30th October at Highgate Cemetery at 11am

By setting up a £5 direct debit to Christian Aid you are making a regular commitment to tackle the effects of climate change on the world's poor.
Donating £5 a month could help our partners construct dams so that people don’t have to rely on the rains to grow their crops and feed their family.
Just £5 a month could help families to plant trees to help prevent soil erosion.
£5 a month could provide drought-resistant seeds that need less water to grow.
Climate change costs lives but you can help change this.

To end poverty, we need to challenge the causes of poverty, not just the symptoms.

Charity 'makes you feel better'
It is not having lots of money that makes us happy - it is spending it on others, Canadian researchers suggest.
A team from the University of British Columbia said spending as little as $5 (£2.52) on others helped.
Staff who got bonuses and spent some of the extra money on others were happier than those who spent their bonuses on themselves, the research found.
A UK psychologist said such charitable giving improved how people saw themselves - and how others saw them.

UNICEF helps children receive the support, health care and education they need to survive the threats of childhood poverty - such as preventable disease or malnutrition - and grow up to become healthy adults.
We strive to protect children from violence and abuse, and from exploitation through child labour or trafficking. We also protect children in the midst of war and natural disasters, and provide emergency assistance, usually within 48 hours.

Today, there are millions of children in underdeveloped countries who have no parents, food, clothing, or access to medical or emotional care. While the majority of these children are dying from malnutrition, their living conditions are so poor that even diaper rash can be deadly. This situation is not isolated; in fact, it is growing at an ever-increasing pace.
A Child's Hope Foundation is bridging this gap by creating adoption orphanages and providing a healthy environment for infants and young children, awakening their spirits while seeking a loving family for them. With your help we can save lives, build families, and be a child's hope for love and belonging in this world!
