Whats your favourite Stupid Bush comment?
- Our enemies never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country, and neither do we.
- I don't know why you're talking about Sweden. They're the neutral one. They don't have an army
- I'm the master of low expectations

Gap Year Travels - Take 2
Writing from the Thai Airport, I'll get you up to speed on my first real day in Thailand.
January 27th
Nina organised a boat tour for the morning to take us for 3 hours up and down the canal which separates central Bangkok and is the main flow of commercial traffic. It's SO much fun, but a little scary due to the cavalier way that people drive their boats at high speed, sending huge (huge) waves across the water, as well as those people that cross from one side to the other with oncoming traffic in both directions. However, I have yet to see any damage. The water is littered with sandals, tins and floating leafy plants that are a haven for the slightly intimidating black fish that populate it.
We travelled to a number of temples - or 'Wat's' - but a lot of hawkers patrol these areas and pretend that they are closed and try to send you somewhere else. This prevented us from visiting Wat Pho and the Grand Palace on this day, however we did make it into Wat Arun which is decorated with thousands of fragments from broken Chinese tea cups and plates. Here i had my first proper sighting of Buddhist prayer and traditions, which in Thailand involve chanting, bowing, lotus flowers, candles, incense, Buddha's and saffron robed monks.
Later we went for an Ayurveda massage in the spa, which is attached to the hotel but situated across the river so requires a boat journey in precariously little clothing in silk kimonos. However, it was the most relaxed I think i have ever felt. In my life. Heloise relaxed? Never! But true.
In the same location across the river we attended a dinner at the restaurant, which provided a show of traditional Thai dancing (which includes a detailed mythological story). To my delight, my grandmother had made friends with the manager of the establishment who was incredibly attractive and unusually tall and broad shouldered (all the more elegant in his silk jacket). Only 28 years old too (not married), as you can see we found out quite a lot about him.
January 28th
So here i have finally arrived at the present day. "Phew!", you're all probably thinking.
This morning I went on a tour, sans Nina, with 3 other nice people from the hotel and a tour guide called Diamond (the Thai name, of which this is a translation, is about 12 syllables) to the Royal Grand Palace, of which I have a few pictures but it was incredibly crowded due to the fact that the King's older sister (in her 80s) died in early January and there are 100 days of mourning (everyone generally wears black or white in Bangkok right now, if they can afford it).
Here we also saw the Emerald Buddha, which the King has to clothe at the turn of each season or else some disaster will happen. We were also informed about the great importance of the white elephant to a King's reign, and that there are 32 characteristics that the already albino elephant has to have, such as exactly 3cm hairs, certain length of tusk, trunk, tail etc. And this King has 9 of these perfect elephants - might i also add that the symbol of the King is a 9 tiered canopy.
FINALLY, I'm done with the updates thus far. I'm still sitting in the Airport on my way to Cambodia, but i'm returning on Febuary 3rd to Bangkok, where I will be increasing my collections of orchids (i think i'm becoming an old lady, flower pressing indeed!)0 comentarios 672 días

Gap Year Travels - Under Control Take 1
So to bring you up to speed of the past few days I'll start from where I left off, which was in Amsterdam smoking in the hotel lobby.
January 25th - Midday
Met 4 lovely blokes from Sheffield spending the weekend partying for a 21st birthday. Ended hanging out with these likely lads for a number of hours, in which time i bummed many ciagrettes, got a free beer, watched iceskating and got quite friendly with one of them. And that's the end of that tale.
January 26th - Midday
Arrived in Thailand after an hour in Immigration in which I spent the entire time panicing that they'd look at me and say " Sorry, get out of our country and go home, you havn't got a visa!" Obviously this didn't happen and I didn't do a Bridget Jones ( as in, end up in a Thai jail). Was picked up by 'Mr Win, Car no.10' - as I was frequently reminded - and taken to the Oriental Hotel where I recieved a beautiful hanging flower...thing. I also learned how to say 'Good Day' and 'Thank you' in Thai, which i use everyday.
Once the entire hotel had been alerted to my miraculous appearance a day late, i was whisked away to my room where I spent all of 20 minutes having a shower before being dragged to a dress fitting (I know, you're all thinking this is a little bizarre). After being pushed in and out of a dressing room, i finally put my foot down and told Nina (my grandmother) that I had had 3 hours sleep and I didn't want her buying me too many things (obviously in the most respectful way of putting it).
THEN I was given 2 hours to nap (pass out) before being taken to a dinner with some family friends and a number of important ambassadors (a little intimidating given my state). The dinner of spicy Thai food consisted of 12 courses (!) and didn't finish until 11pm Thailand time. Of course, by this point i was running on British time and so very awake.

Gap Year Fiasco, Take 1
SO as per request from the Sues of Bebo I'm writing a blog of my travels to Thailand and Cambodia. I'll try and make it as often as possible.
So the KLM flight to Amsterdam from London City was 1.30hrs late leaving (which never happens) and when I got to AMS I had to fly like a bat out of hell to the gate - which was probably 15min walk, but took me 5 - only to find that the plane had LEFT ME! Even after i told 3 ground staff at London City that I would be late! I then proceeded to have an asthma attack and break into tears. They sent me to various desks to pick up vouchers, care packs and tickets to get me to a hotel (on the bright side was a very nice 4*).
Now, to all who know me even a little you can imagine the fury and drama of this situation. You will be pleased to hear it was only tears instead of a mass murder of the KLM staff.
So here I am, still in transit to my destination and waiting for my 715pm plane (currently 11.30am). Two other happy sides to this:
1. I can smoke in the restaurant!
2. Met a whole team of sports students from Stirling University in Scotland (who would have thought?) on their way to South Africa.
Turns out KLM do this quite regularly, there must have been 100 people bumped off their flights in my hotel alone! (And they have about 15 hotels they work with). What kind of airline is this?
Yoda says: "DON'T FLY KLM!"
More from the front line as soon as i can manage.0 comentarios 675 días

I leave for america this friday so am busy busy busy, but i might be free for coffee tomorrow or thursday, or i'll just pop up to morrisons for a cig. it's all systems go here, my room is heading for code red (but i love packing). Im also busy writing my 3rd attempt at a book, the first was about 11 pages and sucked, the 2nd was about 2 pages and still has potential, and the 3rd is only a page and based in st andrews (but fantasy of course,) i'm going for a sex and the city meets terry pratchett feel for this one, maybe i'll actually finish a chapter, fingers crossed.
jeez this is the first time ive used bebo in months - too many americans thought i was actually amy winehouse, and one person called me! his opening line was "hello sexy" and i nearly dropped the phone in waterstones and ran. however, i just giggled in a disbelieving speechless way. weird
hope to see you soon
