    • Marie's Remedial Remedies #1

      Hypothesis: drinking a glass of water while standing on one's head is an effective cure for a bout of hiccoughs.

      Having never actually heard of someone trying this mythical cure, I decided to test it one evening using a single subject design (myself). Not sure whether comfort would act as a confounding variable, I decided to try it out with my head on the bed and feet up against the wall.

      Assuming that the idea is for some magical intervening "force" which only becomes active when one ingests H20 whilst inverted, to materialise and banish the hiccoughs, the results were inconclusive. Unfortunately incompetence on the part of the research subject was not taken into account prior to the study, and it was thus not anticipated that the subject would be incapable of accurately locating her mouth. Instead the liquid spilled over the entirety of her face, thus initiating a startle response which succeeded in curing the problem.

      Conclusion: it would appear that being unexpectedly splashed in the face with water is a more effective cure for hiccoughs, although further studies are necessary, perhaps incorporating the procedure that was actually supposed to be under investigation. And more intelligent participants.

      Note: for anyone wishing to replicate this study the water sample used was of the Dublin 15 tap variety, which had also been stored for several hours in a water cooler.
