MICROEXPRESSION INFO
by
Delirious Diva
A microexpression is a brief, involuntary facial expression shown on the face of humans when one is trying to conceal an emotion. They consist of and completely resemble the seven universal emotions: disgust, anger, fear, sadness, happiness,surprise, and contempt.0 Replys 14 weeks
Micro-expressions -- facial expressions that last a fraction of a second -- give away exactly how you feel, no matter how hard you try to conceal it.

Background on mirco expessions
In the 1960s, William Condon pioneered the study of interactions at the fraction-of-a-second level. In his famous research project, he scrutinized a four-and-a-half-second film segment frame by frame, where each frame represented 1/25th second. After studying this film segment for a year and a half, he discerned interactional micromovements, such as the wife moving her shoulder exactly as the husband's hands came up, which combined yielded microrhythms.
American psychologist John Gottman began video-recording living relationships to study how couples interact. By studying these micro-movements, Gottman was able to predict which relationships would hold and which would dissolve.
Most people do not seem to perceive microexpressions in themselves or others. In the Wizards Project, previously called the Diogenes Project, for example, researchers Paul Ekman and Dr. Maureen O'Sullivan found that these quick expressions can identify hidden emotions, which can be indicative of lying, and that an extremely small percentage of those he studied had a preternatural knack for detecting them. The Wizards Project researchers call these people "Truth Wizards". To date, the Wizards Project has identified just over 50 people with this ability after testing nearly 20,000 people. Truth Wizards use microexpressions, among many other cues, to determine if someone is being truthful. Scientists hope by studying wizards that they can further advance the techniques used to identify deception.
Ekman claims that anyone can be trained to see such microexpressions relatively easily -
FACIAL ACTION CODING SYSTEM
by
Delirious Diva
Facial Action Coding System (FACS) is a system to taxonomize human facial expressions, originally developed by Paul Ekman and Wallace Friesen in 1976.It is a common standard to systematically categorize the physical expression of emotions, and it has proven useful to psychologists and to animators.0 Replys 14 weeks
Using FACS, human coders can manually code nearly any anatomically possible facial expression, decomposing it into the specific Action Units (AU) and their temporal segments that produced the expression. As AUs are independent of any interpretation, they can be used for any higher order decision making process including recognition of basic emotions, or pre-programmed commands for an ambient intelligent environment. However, the FACS literature only provides the list of AUs and nothing about the interpretation of each facial expression. In other words, this is an encyclopedia of facial expressions and it is up to the reader to attach any meaning to them.
FACS defines 32 AUs, which are a contraction or relaxation of one or more muscles. It also defines a number of Action Descriptors, which differ from AUs in that the authors of FACS have not specified the muscular basis for the action and have not distinguished specific behaviors as precisely as they have for the AUs.
For example, FACS can be used to distinguish two types of smiles as follows:
* insincere and voluntary Pan American smile: contraction of zygomatic major alone
* sincere and involuntary Duchenne smile: contraction of zygomatic major and inferior part of orbicularis oculi.
Although the labeling of expressions currently requires trained experts, researchers have had some success in using computers to automatically identify FACS codes, and thus quickly identify emotions Computer graphical face models, such as CANDIDE or Artnatomy, allow expressions to be artificially posed by setting the desired action units.
The use of FACS has been proposed for use in the analysis of depression[4], and the measurement of pain in patients unable to express themselves verbally
FACS is designed to be self-instructional. People can learn the technique from a number of sources including manuals and workshops, and obtain certification through testing A variant of FACS has been developed to analyze facial expressions in chimpanzees -
PAUL EKMAN INFO (THE REAL CAL LIGHTMAN)
by
Delirious Diva
Paul Ekman (born February 15, 1934) is a psychologist who has been a pioneer in the study of emotions and their relation to facial expressions. He is considered one of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the twentieth century. Ekman takes a developmental approach, in that the development of human traits and states over time is the background to his research (Keltner, 2007). The character Cal Lightman of the television series Lie to Me is loosely based on him and his work.0 Replys 14 weeks
Ekman was born in 1934 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Newark, New Jersey, Washington, Oregon, and Southern California. He is the son of a pediatrician.
He received a Research Scientist Award from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in 1971, which was renewed in 1976, 1981, 1987, 1991, and 1997. For over forty years, NIMH supported his research through fellowships, grants, and awards.
In 2001, Ekman collaborated with John Cleese for the BBC documentary series The Human Face. He retired in 2004 as professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
He was named one of the top 100 most influential people in the May 11, 2009 edition of Time magazine.
Contrary to the belief of some anthropologists including Margaret Mead, Ekman found that facial expressions of emotion are not culturally determined, but universal to human culture and thus biological in origin. Ekman's finding is now widely accepted by scientists. Expressions he found to be universal included those indicating anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise. Findings on contempt are less clear, though there is at least some preliminary evidence that this emotion and its expression are universally recognized.
In a research project along with Dr. Maureen O'Sullivan, called the Wizards Project (previously named the Diogenes Project), Ekman reported on facial "microexpressions" which could be used to reliably detect lying. He reported identifying "naturals", that after testing a total of 20,000 people from all walks of life, he found only 50 people that had the ability to spot deception without any formal training. These naturals are also labeled as "Truth Wizards", or wizards of deception detection.
He developed the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) to taxonomize every conceivable human facial expression. Ekman conducted and published research on a wide variety of topics in the general area of non-verbal behavior. His work on lying, for example, was not limited to the face, but also to observation of the rest of the body.
In his profession he also uses verbal signs of lying. When interviewed about the Monica Lewinsky scandal, he mentioned that he could detect that former President Bill Clinton was lying because he used distancing language.
Ekman has contributed much to the study of social aspects of lying, why we lie, and why we are often unconcerned with detecting lies.He is currently on the Editorial Board of Greater Good magazine, published by the Greater Good Science Center of the University of California, Berkeley. His contributions include the interpretation of scientific research into the roots of compassion, altruism, and peaceful human relationships. Ekman is also working with Computer Vision researcher Dimitris Metaxas on designing a visual lie-detector
Ekman devised a list of basic emotions from cross-cultural research on the Fore tribesmen of Papua New Guinea. He observed that members of an isolated, stone age culture could reliably identify the expressions of emotion in photographs of people from cultures with which the Fore were not yet familiar. They could also ascribe facial expressions to descriptions of situations. On this evidence, he concluded that some emotions were basic or biologically universal to all humans. The following is Ekman's (1972) list of basic emotions:
* Anger
* Disgust
* Fear
* Happiness
* Sadness
* Surprise
However in the 1990s Ekman expanded h

LIE TO ME TO FOCUS ON DEVELOPING CHARACTERS IN SEASON TWO
'Lie to Me' on Fox to focus on developing characters
The first season introduced viewers to the science. With Shawn Ryan in charge, the new season will delve more into the lives of the scientists, and add some adrenaline.
When CBS canceled "The Unit," 20th Century Fox Television didn't waste time in asking its show runner, Shawn Ryan, to move to Fox's "Lie to Me" to become that drama's boss.
Ryan, who also created "The Shield" for FX, appeared at a news conference at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena with creator Samuel Baum, who still serves as an executive producer, to discuss what he hopes to bring to the sophomore series.
Inspired by the scientific discoveries of Dr. Paul Ekman, a psychologist who can read clues embedded in the human face, body and voice to expose the truth and lies in criminal investigations, "Lie to Me" stars Tim Roth as Dr. Cal Lightman, the world's leading deception expert.
"I want to push it a little bit more in a character direction, add a little bit more adrenaline," Ryan said, noting that he doesn't mean he's going to turn Dr. Lightman into Jack Bauer. "I just want to get to know these characters better. . . . The show is ultimately based on a group of scientists. But the fact is they are people who are diving into the middle of charged cases. They are going to be in emotionally and physically harrowing situations at times. And I think the pace of the show will just get some juice."
In the first season, Baum said he wanted to introduce viewers to the science. But now, with Ryan's help, the characters will be challenged on a personal level, he added.
The science, Ryan said, differentiates the series from other shows, especially from "The Mentalist," which features Simon Baker as a mind reader of sorts. "We want to tell stories that you can't find anywhere else," Ryan said.

ABOUT LIE TO ME
Lie to Me* is an American television that premiered on the Fox network on January 21, 2009.In the show & is also started on british satelite channel Sky1 on the 14 of may 2009 & is show on thursdays,
Dr. Cal Lightman and his colleagues in The Lightman Group accept assignments from third parties (commonly local and federal law enforcement), and assist in investigations, reaching the truth through applied psychology: interpreting microexpressions, through the Facial Action Coding System, and body language. Dr. Lightman's character is based on Paul Ekman, noted psychologist and expert on body language and facial expressions,
In May 2009, the show was renewed for a second season consisting of 13 episodes
Dr. Cal Lightman, played by Tim Roth is a psychologist with an expertise on body language and especially micro-expressions, and founder of The Lightman Group, a private company that operates as an independent contractor to assist investigations of local and federal law enforcement through applied psychology.Though often confronted by people's skepticism, Lightman uses any psychological technique he deems necessary to reach the truth, however elaborate or truculent. He is divorced, and has split custody of his teenage daughter. His mother committed suicide while he was still young, an event that led him to discovering and researching micro-expressions. This character is based on Dr. Paul Ekman, notable psychologist and expert on body language and facial expressions at UC San Francisco
Dr. Gillian Foster, played by Kelli Williams, is Dr. Lightman's colleague and co-worker in The Lightman Group.Her husband's lack of candor often challenges her open pact with Lightman: not to let their professional skill interfere with coworker's personal lives. She had adopted a baby (Sophie) that was eventually returned to its birth mother. This character is based on Prof Maureen O’Sullivan psychology professor at the University of San Francisco.
Eli Loker, played by Brendan Hines, was initially an employee of The Lightman Group. Loker is academically educated and acquired his skills in "reading" people through practice. He also adheres to radical honesty, and thus rarely lies, even if that makes him appear rude or undiplomatic. Lightman demoted him to an unpaid intern after, despite Foster's warnings, he divulged sensitive information to the SEC while working on a case.
Ria Torres, played by Monica Raymund, is an employee of The Lightman Group, and a protegee of Dr. Lightman's, who was recognized as a "natural" while she was still working as a TSA agent.Torres was abused as a child, a common pattern among naturals, by her father. Though talented and loyal, she lacks academic training and sometimes lets her emotions cloud her judgment.
Recurring Characters.
Ben Reynolds played by Mekhi Phifer, is a street-wise FBI agent who assists the Lightman Group in their investigations, offering armed assistance and practical insights.
Zoe Landau, played by Jennifer Beals, is Cal Lightman's ex-wife. She is an assistant to the Attorney General and though currently engaged to another man, she also engaged in a tryst with Lightman, after he helped her in a case.
Emily Lightman, played by Hayley McFarland, is Cal Lightman's teenage daughter. She is under shared custody between her parents, and though she does not appreciate her father's ability to "read" her, she does not deny its merit for social screening. She sometimes shows a talent for "reading" people, even her father.
Karl Dupree, played by Sean Patrick Thomas, is a Secret Service agent who becomes romantically involved with Torres. He was seriously injured during a terrorist attack.
Alec Foster, played by Tim Guinee, is Gillian Foster's husband. He works at the United States Department of State and is a recovering cocaine addict. He and Gillian have decided to separate.
