- Wooo!!! I'm the American Idol! Thank you guys for voting for me! I was born at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, to Brad Hicks and Pamela Dickinson Hicks. As an infant,I had blond hair. My hair color turned dark brown/black as an adolescent, and started turning gray by the time I was 15. Me and my family moved to suburban Hoover when I was 8 years old. My parents divorced when I was 8. As a child I was often called Coconut Head because of my hair style. Growing up in Hoover,I came running up to her when I was about twelve years old saying, "Grandma, you've got to hear this!" Then I sang Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness" for her. According to my father, when I was 5 years old I sang to random strangers the music of Kenny Rogers or Michael Jackson, to name a few. I bought my first harmonica when I was 16.
