On the fifth of November 1605 a man named Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, he failed. Decades into the future a revolutionary named V will try to do the same. He will succeed. Freedom Forever!

Today is Oscar Wilde's Birthday. You probably don't know who this is (somebody asked me if he was a film director today!), but you should so shame on you!!!! He was a marvellous man and was responsible for works of art such as; The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Selfish Giant, The Harlot's House, The Ballad of Reading Gaol and one of his last pieces: De Profundis.
In his heyday, Wilde was hailed as a genius, albeit a highly controversial one, but now it seems he is sadly forgotten. His demise began when he fell in love (despite being married with two sons) with Lord Alfred Douglas, or Bosie, the son of the near illiterate Marquis of Queensbury. Bosie was not Wilde's first homosexual encounter, but he was the last.
In 1895 Wilde was sentenced to two years hard labour for 'acts of gross indecency' (basically being gay) after a bitter libel case against Queensbury. During his time in Reading Gaol, Wilde lost everything. His mother died three months into his sentence, his wife changed her's and their son's surnames and moved out of the country. She later died from complications during back surgery, leaving Oscar unable to see his own sons. Whilst in prison, Wilde was able to write perhaps his best and most profound piece, De Profundis, a letter to Bosie which was later published.
Wilde was released from prison in 1897. Upon release, he fled to Europe to live with his friend Robbie Ross. Unfortunately, prison had left Oscar in poor health and he died of meningitis (not syphillis as is commonly thought) on the 30th of November 1900 aged just 46. He died a social outcast, living in (utterly undeserved) poverty.
I hope I have done my bit to educate you about Oscar Wilde, he certainly deserves a little recognition from 'our generation'. So remember (or discover) a truly fantastic man!!!!!
