With just six days until the event, the NUsum DJ competition attracted mixes from all over the UK and beyond, with AWsum even receiving entries from as far as Spain and Russia.

All mixes were listened to by Andy Whitby, Cally Gage and various members of the AWsum team before a choice was made, with the winning 7 each bringing something a little different to the table.

Here are the 7 winners in alphabetical order - congratulations to you all!

Dan Leak
Dan’s mix was exactly what we were looking for @ AWsum. A blend of different styles and tracks; mixed together tightly and cleanly always ensuring nothing was clashing. The energy levels didn’t dip at any point during the mix, making it an easy choice for a slot.

DJ Discam
Discam’s mix was hi-octane, exciting, well-planned and most of all fun, something AWsum is all about! His range of tracks, clever mixes and uplifting track selection made it a perfect non-stop hard-dance journey.

James Ellis
Birmingham’s very own James Ellis had something for everyone on his mix. From vocal Hard-Bounce, to electro kick-backed Hardhouse and everything in between, it was interesting, exciting and very well put together, showcasing a DJ who will rock the floor on May 24th!

Lil Rich
Rich’s classics mix was spot-on, with such gems as ‘Sweet Dreams’, ‘Ready 4 Dis’, ‘No Way’ and ‘Bad Ass’ all making an appearance. It also featured a lot of different ideas and tricks, including Andy Farley’s remix of ‘What U Got 4 Me? Bootlegged with Paul Janes remix of ‘The Dawn’ and an acapella mashup of ‘Til Tears Do Us Part’ all adding to the winning selection.

Paul Devine
Something a little bit different from Paul who put together a mix which wasn’t obvious or predictable at any time, leaving us wanting to hear what was coming next. It kept us on our toes til the very end and is a perfect choice for such a big party!

DJ Tobias
Tobia’s mix of bounce and scouse house grabbed out attention due to the amount of unique and different tracks not heard on any of the 200+ demos we were sent. Mixed together extremely well, it was a well-planned blend of the more fun and euphoric side of our scene which never lost interest from start to finish!

Wain Johnstone
‘Smile 4’ was the name of the mix Wain submitted to us for this comp and it certainly made us do as the title suggests! Hi-speed, hi-octane and hugely fun, the amount of his own tracks on their really gave it a unique sound and earn him his spot.


On behalf of us all at AWsum we want to thank EVERYONE who entered this competition, and what promises to be the first of many as the NUsum DJ era begins.

All the mixes will be featured on a special eflyer next week so you can listen yourself to why they won and what needs to be done to earn a spot on a future event!

Another Republica favourite, KUTSKI was an obvious choice for the birthday party. Since his debut for us back in 2005, he's gone from strength to strength and now carries the torch for all things above 145bpm every weekend on BBC Radio 1.
