  • Sunday October 25, 2009 - Celtic return to the top

CELTIC are back on top of the SPL after beating HAMILTON ACCIES 2-1 today at New Douglas Park.

Goals from Shaun Maloney and Scott McDonald put the Hoops two ahead at the interval. Mickael Antoine-Curier pulled one back late on, but the Parkhead club held on for the three points.

Yesterday, RANGERS spurred the chance to cement first place after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by HIBERNIAN. Kris Boyd opened the scoring for the Gers early on, but the visitors pulled level after 63 minutes, thanks to a superb strike from Anthony Stokes.

The highest scoring game of the weekend was at New St Mirren Park as ST MIRREN and MOTHERWELL played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. The Saints were ahead at half-time after Hugh Murray's opener. But they were pegged back just after the restart following Ross Forbes' penalty. Gus MacPherson's men then went into a two-goal lead after goals from Andy Dorman and a second from Murray. However, Well fought back to earn a point, with Lucas Jutkiewicz the visitors' hero, netting twice late on.

DUNDEE UNITED saw off a disappointing ABERDEEN side, coming away from Pittodrie with a 2-0 win. Two first half goals from Damian Casalinuovo and Morgaro Gomis earned the Arabs an easy three points.

KILMARNOCK got their first league win since the opening day of the season, as they defeated ST JOHNSTONE 2-1 at Rugby Park. Kevin Kyle got Killie's two goals, whch both came in the second half. The Perth Saints' consolation came courtesy of a Frazer Wright own goal in injury time.

Bottom side, FALKIRK earned a decent away point as they held HEARTS to a 0-0 draw at Tynecastle. Csaba Laszlo's Jambos had the game's best chances, but the Bairns were well worth their point thanks to an impressive defensive display.

  • Sunday, October 18, 2009 - Hoops fail to retain top spot

Rangers ended the weekend top of the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League and Falkirk remain rooted to the foot after the latest round of fixtures yesterday.

Following Rangers win against St Johnstone in the 12.30 kick-off, CELTIC needed a win to return to the summit. However, they were held to a goalless draw by MOTHERWELL at Parkhead. As expected, Tony Mowbray's men had the majority of the possession on their home patch, but couldn't breakdown a resolute Well rearguard.

HIBERNIAN remain of the coattails of the Old Firm after they defeated KILMARNOCK 1-0 at Easter Road. Abdessalam Benjelloun got the only goal of the game from the penalty spot with six minutes to go.

At Pittodrie, ABERDEEN and HEARTS shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw. Lee Miller opened the scoring just before half-time, to claim his first goal of the campaign. Andrew Driver levelled things up after 62 minutes, with a fine left foot finish from inside the box.

ST MIRREN had a fine 3-1 win against FALKIRK at the Falkirk Stadium. The home side took the lead 10 minutes into the second half through an Alex MacDonald header. Craig Dargo equalised for the Buddies on the 67th minute and Billy Mehmet turned the game on its head minutes later to give Gus MacPherson's side the lead. Tom Brighton rounded off the victory, slamming home a loose ball with two minutes to go.

DUNDEE UNITED came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with HAMILTON ACCIES courtesy of Garry Kenneth goal three minutes into injury time. Mickael Antoine-Curier's strike after 65 minutes looked to have secured a deserved win for the Accies, until Kenneth popped up late on.

  • Saturday, October 17, 2009 - Gers defeat Saints to go top

Following the SPL's early kick-off, RANGERS moved to the top of the table, for a couple of hours at least, after defeating ST JOHNSTONE 2-1 at McDiarmid Park.

Collin Samuel opened the scoring for the hosts after 17 minutes, slotting past Gers 'keeper Allan McGregor, having been put clean through on goal by Murray Davidson.

The Saints controlled the rest of the first half, however, they had to settle for going in level at the interval, when Rangers equalised with five minutes of the half remaining. A Kevin Thomson shot deflected off team-mate Kyle Lafferty, then a St Johnstone defender, before falling into the path of Kris Boyd who drilled the ball home.

Derek McInnes men continued to create the better chances in the second half, but it was the away side who got the decisive strike with only seven minutes to go. Steven Whittaker's cross from the right picked out Steven Naismith, who nodded into the path of Sasa Papac. The Bosnian switched the ball from his right foot to his left, before sending a superb curling effort beyond a helpless Alan Main.

Rangers now sit two points clear of Celtic ahead of this afternoon's 3pm kick-offs, with St Johnstone lying in 10th position.
