À propos de moi
Suicide is a major problem in Ireland today. In 2005, 471 people took their lives and 11000 people presented to hospitals with self harm. These figures were printed in the annual report of the National Office of Suicide Prevention for 2007. Unfortunately any data on suicide can only measure what is reported. Sadly suicude is now reported to kill more people than gun crime and road traffic accidents each year. However, due to the stigma that still exists with matters of suicide and mental health, cases go unreported.

Many programs are in place to tackle the growing issue of suicide however i have yet to see an active advertising campaign directed at Suicide in particular. The Health Service Executive has been active in providing the ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) course to community groups. However if we ever want to really change the trend in suicide deaths in this country, training needs to be more widespread and people need to be more proactive.

  • Depression - Symptoms of Major Depression

Not all people with depression will show all symptoms or have them to the same degree. If a person has four or more symptoms, for more than two weeks, consult a doctor or mental health professional right away. While the symptoms specified for all groups below generally characterize major depression, there are other disorders with similar characteristics including: bipolar illness, anxiety disorder, or attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity.

•Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions.
•Thoughts of suicide; suicide plans or attempts.
•Persistent physical symptoms or pains that do not respond to treatment.

Chronic illnesses may be present also since depression weakens the immune system. Other signs include persistent unhappiness, negativity, complaining, chronic boredom, no initiative.

•Disorganized speech - hard to follow when telling you a story, etc.
•Physical symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, stomachaches, arms or legs ache, nail-biting, pulling out hair or eyelashes. (ruling out other medical causes)
    •Suicidal talk or attempts.

    In Adolescents
Depressive illnesses/anxiety may be disguised as, or presented as, eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia, drug/alcohol abuse, sexual promiscuity, risk-taking behavior such as reckless driving, unprotected sex, carelessness when walking across busy streets, on bridges or cliffs. There may be social isolation, running away, constant disobedience, getting into trouble with the law, physical or sexual assaults against others, obnoxious behavior, failure to care about appearance/hygiene, no sense of self or of values/morals, difficulty cultivating relationships, inability to establish/stick with occupational/educational goals.

  • Concerned about Suicide

(This information is based on the leaflet “Concerned
about Suicide”, originally produced by the HSE
Resource Officers for Suicide Prevention, Ireland and
the Suicide Awareness Coordinators for Northern
Ireland. Re-printed as part of the all-island
cooperation in implementing the suicide prevention
strategies Reach Out [Republic of Ireland] and
Protect Life - A Shared Vision [Northern Ireland].)

    The Warning Signs
Most people who feel suicidal don’t really want to
die, they just want an end to their pain. These are
some of the signs which may indicate that someone
is thinking of taking their life:
    • A suicide attempt or act of self harm
    • Expressing suicidal thoughts
    • Preoccupation with death
    • Depression
    • Becoming isolated
    • Alcohol abuse
    • Drug abuse
    • Sudden changes in mood or behaviour
    • Making ‘final’ arrangements, e.g. giving away
possessions (such as books, CDs, DVDs)

    Associated Risk Factors
    • Access to a method of suicide, e.g.
    medication, firearms
    • Loss of someone close (such as a friend or
    family member)
    • Relationship break-up
    • Impulsiveness, recklessness and risktaking
    behaviour
    • Alcohol / drug abuse

    How to Respond
If you are concerned about someone you can follow
    these three steps:
    Show You Care
Offer support and let them know you care.
    Say something like:
    • ‘I’m worried about you and I want to help’
    • ‘What’s up? I’m very worried about you’
    • ‘Whatever’s bothering you we will get through
    this together’

    Ask the Question
Don’t be afraid to discuss suicide – asking about it
won’t put the idea in people’s heads:
    • ‘Do you feel like harming yourself?’
    • ‘Do you feel like ending your life?’
    • ‘Are you so down that you just want to end
    it all?’

    Call For Help
Encourage them to look for help:
‘Let’s talk to someone who can help’
‘I will stay with you until you get help’
‘You’re not alone and there are people who
can help you out of this situation’
If you, or someone you know, is in crisis now and
    need someone to talk to:
    • Contact Samaritans on 1850 609090 Republic
    of Ireland
    • Contact your local doctor or GP out-of-hours
service; see ‘Doctors - General Practitioners’
in the Golden Pages, Republic of Ireland
    • Go to, or contact, the Accident and Emergency
Department of your nearest general hospital

However, people are all different so it can be a case that no one behaves the same way as the last person did... all we can do is be vigilant.

  • Suicide is not the answer

    Anthony par Anthony
Suicide is difficult to class in medicine, its not a disease caused by some single factor and its not quite a full psychiatric illness. It is usually seen in cases of deep depression which are quite noticable but for some reason, a reason we will never really know, a deciion is made to take one's life. It has always amazed me how lmuch people can tell you about gangkland killings and road accidents and how they cuase deaths but suicide is a different matter. The amount of myths about suicide are amazing. I never fail to be amazed at the amount of people who think if someone says they are thinking of killing themselves you should laugh it off becasue this is a sure sign they will not and inded this has been proven wron in many cases. I have had my ups and downs in life and can even say that have been at a point where i was thinking about suicide and the most shocking things is how certain your thoughts are at that point. Thinking back now, i can clearly see how misguided i was and much hurt it would have caused but your judgement is just clouded at a time like that and you only see the immediate few days or hours.

This first Forum post has no real topic its just me throwing out some thoughts.

The problem is in the counselors.
Talking about problems isn't always the answer. Sometimes it's the wrong way because it can manifest itself more through remembering.
They push and push and push to get teens to talk about stuff that already upsets them when it's mentioned. They then write down in notes their PERSONAL diagnosis.
They prescribe medication that doesn't work properly and expect people to be ok. It takes more than a pill. It takes more than an ear. Suicidal people need someone that cares. Someone that knows and someone that can offer real advice to help them battle through their problems.

RIP to anyone who has passed due to this

I know someone who committed suicide...
She was pretty & healthy, funny, & a lot of people cared about her.
But she thought she was ugly & fat & everyone hated her...
She honestly believed she wasn't worthy of being alive.

One of my friends still cries herself to sleep over it..

Fair play to you for setting up this page, there is indeed a cloud and a stigma attached to suicide. thanks for bringing it to light and hopefully even one person might be helped. So many people's lives are empty and so helpless and frustrated after losing someone to suicide.Depression and suicidal tendencies are legitimate illness just as cancer or heart disease are. People make the assumption that a person who takes their own lives are in their right mind, so therefore - must be selfish. Its so wrong. Anyone who would like to talk or who needs support or an outside perspective, mail me.
