Money Talks - An Outsiders Perspective
Top Local Bands "Binned" from Doghouse Fundraiser

Back on Tuesday 10th March of this year, the thriving Dundee music scene was dealt a huge blow when popular live-music venue The Doghouse closed its doors.

Insolvency administrators were called in after Dundee City Council sued licensee Sarah Hill in February over unpaid debts, believed to be in the region of over £10,000, although Miss Hill later claimed to have have brought the sum down to £7,000 from £12,000 and had been been paying back £2,000 at a time.

The venue, formerly Brown Street Public School, was voted Scotland's best live music venue in 2007 and had become a real hub and heartbeat of the music scene in Dundee. Local Indie chart-toppers The View practically lived in the place in their early days and owe a lot to the venue for their early rise to fame.

The closure sparked an outcry from shocked staff, customers, gig-goers, bands and artists alike. Creating online petitions and "Bring Back The Doghouse" groups on social networking sites such as bebo and Facebook. Last Saturday (25th April), saw the first of 2 fundraisers held to help raise funds for The Doghouse and help the venue re-open its doors. This was held at Dundee's Whitehall Theatre and over 100 people were in attendance to watch bands such as The Trade, The Cundeez, Havana Swing and popular Led Zeppelin tribute The Levee Breakers.

The second of these fundraisers is to be held at Fat Sams LIVE this Saturday (2nd May). Organisers and gig-goers alike were delighted about the news in the last few days that The View will be headlining the fundraiser, almost guaranteeing a bumper crowd.

However, this has come at the expense of other top upcoming local talent who were already on the bill for the fundraiser. In particular top local band The Goodnights, who were one of the first acts on the bill and were obviously delighted to be helping out with this worthy cause. The popular local band, who formed in 2007, have been one of the biggest supporters of the "Bring Back The Doghouse" campaign and have been doing their bit from day one, via their blogs and status updates on their Myspace, bebo and Facebook pages as well as their own website, trying to help rally people to sign petitions and get behind the campaign to bring back the venue that they love so much.

They were on the posters and flyers for the event and many of their fans had already purchased tickets to see them play and they were really looking forward to playing and doing their bit for The Doghouse. However they recieved an email from The Doghouse promoter Jonathan Dawson on Monday afternoon. The email contained the following:

"I've bad news I'm afraid. The View want to do 1hr 15mins and Fat Sams are pulling the curfew back by 30-minutes due to it being a 14+ show and because of this we are having to drop the 1st two bands off the bill. This feels stinking but in truth we need to ACCOMMODATE The View as it is THEM who will sell the place out, thus raising the required money to reopen the dog. I dont expect you to be happy with this but i hope you understand..."

The Goodnights have been left feeling very angry about this and speaking to lead guitarist John Mill, he was bitterly disappointed:

"This one is clearly just for the money. And we have been left with a load of angry punters who bought tickets to see us and are now asking about refunds!"

"my respect for the Doghouse has went completely downhill in the past 12 hours. The Goodnights won't be playing the Dog again!"

Ok, fine, THE VIEW are a good selling point for the fundraiser, but there was no need for them to request such a long-set, resulting in some top local bands missing out and the chance to play to a big crowd (potentially 1000 people! A large percentage of whom maybe never even heard or seen the top local bands showcasing their talents).
